Warriors Fall in Home Opener

CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College men's lacrosse team took the field in front of a home crowd for the first time on Saturday, but fell 10-6 to the visiting Southwestern University Pirates.

Alex Ortenstone put up a solid performance for the Warriors, winning 10 out of 15 faceoffs, earning a career-high eight ground balls, and scoring a goal. Travis Rabun led the offense with two goals and an assist, while Christian Wheeler tallied 16 saves and scooped up six ground balls.

The Warriors won the ground ball battle 38-35 and edged the Pirates in faceoffs 12-8, but the home team was bit by the turnover bug, committing 32 turnovers while the Pirates committed just 25. In the first quarter, the Warriors outshot the Pirates 10-5 but only managed to find the net once and trailed 2-1 after the first frame. The Pirates extended their lead in the second quarter, scoring a pair of goals in the final minute before halftime to take a 6-2 advantage into the break.

The two teams traded goals throughout the third and fourth quarters. Every time that Hendrix appeared poised to mount a comeback, Southwestern answered with a goal of their own to maintain a four-goal lead. The Pirates killed off the remainder of the clock, possessing the ball in the offensive zone and the Warriors fell to the 10-6 defeat.

Hendrix falls to 1-1 on the season and will return to action on February 14 when they travel to Irving, Texas to take on University of Dallas.
