Warriors Split with SAA Rival Majors

JACKSON, Miss. - The Hendrix College softball team split a doubleheader with Southern Athletic Association foe Millsaps College on Sunday afternoon, downing the Majors 6-5 in game one, before falling 2-0 in game two.

In the first contest, the Warriors jumped on the previously undefeated Majors, gaining a 3-0 lead in the first few innings. The squad scratched across an unearned run in the first and added to their lead in the top of the third with an RBI single from Autumn Martin and an RBI double from Kayla Patton.

Millsaps grabbed a run in the bottom of the third, but Nikki Sanders answered in the top of the fourth with a solo bomb to maintain the Warriors' three-run lead. In the sixth, Hendrix added a much needed insurance run, capitalizing on a Millsaps error to make it 5-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Millsaps trailed by four runs. With one swing, Milsaps' Megan Murray leveled the score with a grand slam, making it 5-5 headed into the seventh inning. In the top half of the final frame, Michaela Larabee drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bryanna Carlisle. Deva Bharne drove home Larabee by scorching a single up the middle to give Hendrix a 6-5 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Carlisle allowed two base runners, but forced Kathryn Rome to fly out to right field to end the game and give the Warriors the 6-5 victory.

In game two, the Hendrix offense ran into a buzzsaw. Millsaps' Cassidy DeNoon allowed just one hit and two walks over seven innings of shutout pitching. Kayla Patton nearly kept pace with the Majors' ace, but was touched up for a two-run home run in the bottom of the second, one of just four hits the pitcher gave up on the day. The Majors took game two 2-0, splitting the doubleheader with the Warriors.
