MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Hendrix College softball team was defeated twice by Rhodes College in Southern Athletic Association action at Lynx Field on Tuesday afternoon. The host Lynx (3-15-1, 2-5-1) took the first game from the Warriors (5-10, 2-6) 13-4 in five innings, then won the nightcap 8-7.
Rhodes outhit the Warriors 14-4 in the game one. However, all four of the hits for Hendrix were solo home runs.
Sydney Ozersky,
Shelby Anderson and
Nikki Sanders opened the third inning with back-to-back-to-back bombs. Freshman first baseman
Deva Bharne added her first home run in the top of the fifth.
The Lynx scored five runs in both the first and second innings, one in the third and two in the fourth.
Kayla Patton (1-3) took the loss, while Forrest Skelton (2-6) earned the victory.
Rhodes built up a 5-0 lead after two innings in the second game. Hendrix plated two runs in the third when freshman right fielder
Samantha Schaefer led off with a single and later scored from third on a passed ball. Sophomore second baseman
Victoria Hughes doubled and scored on a ground ball from Bharne.
The Lynx added a run in the bottom of the third to go up 6-2, but the Warriors tied the game with a four-run fourth. Junior designated player
Kayla Patton hit a double that scored Sanders. Schaefer followed with a two-run double, plating freshman pitcher
Autumn Martin and freshman pinch runner
Rebecca Maeder. Schaefer stole third and was driven in by Hughes.
Rhodes regained the lead in a run in the fifth, but Hendrix tied it again in top of the sixth. Martin led off with a single, was moved over to third and stole home. Skelton scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth after drawing a walk, stealing second, getting to third on a passed ball then crossing the plate on a single from Makenzie Martin.
Allison Long (1-1) earned the win in relief and freshman reliever
Bryanna Carlisle (2-2) took the loss.
Hendrix Notes- The four home runs in game one set a new program for the Warriors, topping the old record of three set against Rust in 2005 & 2009.
- Anderson's home run was the fourth in her career. Ozersky and Sanders each have two.
- Hughes stole her 10th base of the year, moving into third on the Warriors' single-season list.
- Schaefer had two hits, two runs and a pair of RBI in game two.
- Hughes, Schaefer and Patton each connected on doubles in the second game
Rhodes Notes- Four Lynx had multiple hits in game one, with Martin picking up three.
- Catcher Rachel Pewitt had two hits, two runs scored and three RBI in the opener.
- Shortstop Erin Parker had three hits in game two.
- First baseman Maggie Mitchell drove in three runs in the nightcap.
