CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College softball team dropped a pair of contests to Nebraska Wesleyan University on Thursday, falling 10-1 in game one and 20-7 in game two.
Autumn Martin went 3-for-3 with a double in game one while
Madi Fires matched that in game two, going 3-for-3 from the plate with a double and four RBI.
Nikki Sanders went 2-for-2 with an RBI and
Samantha Schaefer ripped a double in game one while
Deva Bharne brought in two RBI in the second contest.
In the first game, Hendrix fell behind early as the Prairie Wolves registered 10 runs on eight hits in the first three innings combined. In the fourth and fifth innings, Martin settled down inside the circle, holding NWU scoreless in both frames. The Warriors had chances through the first four innings but stranded seven runners in those frames. The home team got on the board in the fifth inning when Sanders brought home Martin with a single through the left side, but it was all the offense Hendrix could generate in game one.
Game two was a slugfest as the two teams combined for 27 runs and 30 hits. Nebraska Wesleyan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and added a run in the second before the Warriors battled back. Hendrix plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to cut the lead in half. A pair of walks and an error loaded the bases for
Madi Fires, who delivered a line-drive double to the left-center gap, scoring Schaefer and
Morgan Fires to make it 4-2.
NWU bolstered their lead with a six-run fourth, but Hendrix refused to bow out without a fight. The Orange and Black sparked a two-out rally in the bottom of the frame. Schaefer,
Morgan Fires, and
Kayla Patton all drew walks to load the bases once again for
Madi Fires. The freshman smacked a single through the right side, plating a pair of Warriors for her third and fourth RBI of the game.
Victoria Hughes was hit by a pitch and
Deva Bharne drew a bases loaded walk for the Warriors' third run of the inning, making the score 10-5.
The Prairie Wolves scored four more in the top of the sixth, but Hendrix continued to hang around. Patton drew a walk, followed by back-to-back bunt singles from Fires and Hughes. With the bases loaded, Bharne drew her second RBI walk of the game, followed by a sacrifice fly from Martin, as the home team cut into the deficit, making it 14-7. The Hendrix rally was cut short by an inning-ending double play. NWU finished with six more insurance runs in the seventh to cap the game at 20-7.
