Sewanee Outlasts Hendrix in Conference Tilt

CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College men's lacrosse team put forward a valiant effort against Sewanee - The University of the South on Friday night at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium, but it wasn't enough to overcome one of the top squads in the Southern Athletic Association as the Tigers earned a 15-7 win over the Warriors.

The two teams went into the halftime break tied at 7-7 but the Tigers outscored the Warriors 8-0 in the second half to earn the win. Christian Wheeler made 19 savesbut took the loss in net for the Orange and Black. Sewanee's goaltender Selby Austin made seven saves and earned the win.

Robbie Borrello led the Hendrix attack with three goals and two assists. Cody Eckes and Travis Rabun each finished with a goal and an assist while Patrick Rogers and TK Shaffer registered a goal apiece. Kevin Estell led the defense with three caused turnovers while Rabun forced two. Wheeler led the team with seven ground balls while Patrick Munn earned 10 faceoff wins and scooped five ground balls.

In the first quarter, the Warriors jumped on the Tigers, scoring three consecutive goals to open the game. Rogers, Borrello and Rabun each tallied a goal in the first five minutes to put the home team ahead 3-0. Sewanee got on the board with a goal at the 9:48 mark, but the Warriors answered with a Borrello score 1:10 later to make it 4-1. Sewanee closed the quarter with three straight tallies to tie the game at 4-4 headed into the second. 

Hendrix opened the second quarter with a man-up goal to make it 5-4. Borrello found TK Shaffer for a quick-stick score to take the lead. Sewanee notched three goals in a row to take a 7-5 advantage with 8:36 to play in the frame. Trailing by two, Cody Eckes breathed life into the Warriors with a man-down goal that swung momentum back to the Orange and Black. The attacker beat a defender and fired past the goalie to swing the tide and cut the Sewanee lead to just one goal. Two minutes later Borrello tied the game with his third goal of the contest, making it 7-7 with 5:30 remaining. The score remained deadlocked as the two teams entered the halftime break.

In the second half, the Tigers took control of the pace of play. Sewanee won 6-of-9 second half faceoffs and possessed the ball in the Hendrix defensive zone for much of the half. The squad rattled off eight unanswered goals in the second half, shutting out the Hendrix offense to go onto the 15-7 win.

Hendrix Notes
- Travis Rabun extended his points streak to 12 games, dating back to last season.
- Borrello's five points mark the fourth time this year the attacker has registered five or more points.
- Christian Wheeler scooped a season-high seven ground balls. His 19 saves were the second-most in a game this season.
- The Warriors outshot the Tigers 18-17 in the first half, but were outshot 32-3 in the second half.

Sewanee Notes
- Robbie Berndt finished with five goals and two assists to lead the Tigers' offense.
- Of Sewanee's 15 goals in the game, 13 of them came off of an assist.
- George Pratt led the Sewanee defense with five caused turnovers and scooped a pair of ground balls.

Up Next
Hendrix moves to 6-6 on the season with a 1-4 conference mark and will face another SAA foe on Sunday, playing host to the Centre College Colonels at 12 p.m. The team will honor lone senior Branden Harbaugh in their final regular season game of the year.
