CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College softball team lost their final regular season games of the season to #25 Birmingham-Southern College in Southern Athletic Association play at Warrior Field Sunday. The visiting Panthers (30-6-1, 19-2-1) won the first game 7-2 then beat the Warriors (10-24, 6-16) 11-2 in five innings in the finale.
Hendrix will be the sixth seed at the SAA Tournament in Jackson, Miss. and will take on third-seeded Rhodes on Friday. BSC claims the second seed.
The Warriors scored the first run of game one in the bottom of the first when sophomore second baseman
Victoria Hughes singled, stole a base and later scored on an infield single by sophomore
Sydney Ozersky. The Panthers took a 2-1 lead in the third on a hit, an error and a walk. Shortstop Taylor Bassett drove in Ashley Leonard with a single to center to go up 3-1 in the fourth. BSC added four more in the sixth.
Hendrix' final run came in the bottom of the seventh when freshman catcher
Nikki Sanders doubled and Ozersky and senior right fielder
Morgan Fires followed with singles to load the bases. Freshman left fielder
Bryanna Carlisle drew a walk, scoring Sanders, for the final run of the game.
The Warriors outhit the Panthers 9-7 in the game but walked five batters and allowed five unearned runs.
In game two, BSC jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two frames then tacked on four more in the fourth. Bethany Fronk took a perfect game into the bottom of the fifth but allowed junior third baseman
Shelby Anderson to walk and Sanders to reach on an infield single. Freshman first baseman
Deva Bharne followed with another walk to load the bases. Fires drew an RBI walk allowing Anderson to score. Freshman
Rebecca Maeder had a pinch hit RBI ground out, scoring Sanders for the final run of the game.
Hendrix Notes- Hughes had two hits, a run and a stolen base in game one. Her 13 stolen bases on the year is the second most in school history.
- Ozersky also had two hits and a RBI.
- Sanders connected on her fifth double of the season and Bharne recorded her second.
- Maeder registered her second RBI of the season in game two.
Birmingham-Southern Notes- Taylor Harkins earned the game one victory in relief to improve to 16-4 on the year.
- Alyssa Statham drove in four runs with five hits, including a double, on the day.
- Micaela Beck went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI in game two. She hit her 10th homer of the year.
- BSC recorded 13 hits in game two.
