BRANDON, Miss. - The Hendrix College softball team pounded out 16 hits en route to a 17-2, five-inning victory over Sewanee - The University of the South at the Southern Athletic Association Tournament Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Warriors (11-25) eliminate the Tigers (0-30) and will face Millsaps at 7 p.m. Saturday in another elimination game.
Hendrix opened the game with six runs on five hits in the first inning. The Warriors sent 10 batters up to the plate in the opening frame. They tacked on two more each in the second and third and then added seven in the fourth.
All nine players in the lineup had at least one hits with six different players coming up with two or more. The Warriors set new school records with 10 stolen bases on 11 attempts. They also drew eight walks.
Hendrix Notes- Sophomore second baseman
Victoria Hughes went 3-for-3 with four runs scored, tied for the second most in school history. She had a double and tied the school record with three steals.
- Hughes is now 17-for-17 in stolen base attempts on the season.
- Junior third baseman
Shelby Anderson also scored four times on two hits, including a triple.
- Senior right fielder
Morgan Fires connected on a three-run home run in the fourth inning, en route to a 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBI performance.
- Freshman catcher
Nikki Sanders went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and a triple.
- Freshman
Autumn Martin drove in three runs on a double in the fourth inning. She also scored twice and stole two bases.
- Freshman left fielder
Rebecca Maeder had a hit, run scored, RBI and two steals.
- Freshman first baseman
Deva Bharne had a pair of singles and pair of runs batted in as well.
- Junior pitcher
Ariel McDonald hit a two-run single in first career at bat in the first inning. She drove in three runs on the day.
- McDonald (2-2) earned the winning, allowing six hits, two runs and two walks to go with three strikeouts.
- Senior shortstop
Michaela Larabee had a hit, two runs scored and two steals.
Sewanee Notes- The Tigers end the season 0-30.
- Pitcher Shayla Vandergriff recorded a double, triple and both runs scored.
- Catcher Sara Burklin had two hits and a RBI.
- Second baseman Courtney Saunders added a double.
