Warriors Edged by Lynx in the Ninth

CONWAY, Ark. – The Hendrix College baseball team held an early lead, but allowed two runs in the ninth to fall to No. 21 Rhodes College in a Southern Athletic Association tilt on Friday night in Conway.
 
Will Nichol tossed 5.1 innings for the Warriors. He allowed two earned runs on six hits and tied his career-high with six strikeouts, but received a no-decision. Josh Olejnik earned the win for Rhodes, allowing just one hit in 4.1 innings of relief.
 
Brady Newville was the only Warrior to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Ryan Ritz and James Martin each drove in one for the Warriors.
 
Rhodes took an early lead, scoring a run on three hits in the top of the first. Nichol limited the damage, striking out a pair of Lynx with runners on second and third to end the inning.
 
The Warriors battled back to tie in the bottom of the second inning. Spencer Summers led off with a walk and advanced to third on a single by Brady Newville. James Martin brought in Summers with an RBI groundout to tie the game at 1-1.
 
Hendrix took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Summers walked, followed by a Newville double. Three batters later, Ryan Ritz drew a bases loaded walk to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead.
 
The Lynx came back to tie the game in the sixth. With runners on first and third, Marcus Moreland executed a squeeze bunt, bringing home the tying run on the sacrifice to make the score 2-2. Cannon Schrank came on in relief to end the threat in the sixth and preserve the tie through the eighth.
 
In the ninth, Rhodes manufactured a pair of runs to take the lead. A leadoff walk came around to score the go-ahead run on a two-out single by Ryan Olive. Rhodes added an insurance run to make it 4-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
 
In the bottom of the ninth, Seth Mobley led off with a four-pitch walk, but was stranded as the Warriors' ended the inning with a double play. 

Hendrix Notes
- Nichol's six strikeouts tied his career-high. He has struck out six batters three times this season.
- Newville's multi-hit game was his fourth of the year, and his first since March 25 vs. LaGrange.
- Cannon Schrank allowed a pair of runs in relief, the first earned runs he has allowed in a relief appearance this season (15.1 IP).
- Harley Faye struck out the only batter he faced in the top of the ninth inning.

Rhodes Notes
- Ryan Olive went 3-for-4, including the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth.
- Dan Morris was scratched from his start and Jack Mercer got the nod. Mercer went 4.1 allowing two runs on four hits.
- Rhodes earned the win without recording an extra base hit.
