CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College men's basketball team picked up their first Southern Athletic Association victory of the season by defeating Millsaps College 68-56 at Grove Gymnasium Friday night.
The Warriors (2-16, 1-6) also earned their first win since the season opener on Nov. 15. The Majors fall to 2-16 overall and 1-6 in league play.
Hendrix jumped out to a 23-13 lead over the first 13 minutes of the game, but Millsaps went on a 12-4 run to end the half. The Black & Orage led 27-25 going into the break.
The Warriors led 34-31 at the 15:20 mark before going on a 9-0 run on a pair of threes from
Preston Smith and one from
Travis Garrett over the next two minutes to take control 43-31. The Majors would only get within six points one time for the duration of the game.
Hendrix cut down on their miscues, only committing three turnovers in the second half after producing 13 in the opening period.
For the game, the Warriors shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) from the field, 7-of-22 from outside and 7-of-11 from the free throw line. The Majors shot 36.4 percent (20-of-55) overall, 2-of-12 from three-point range and 14-of-24 at the stripe. Hendrix dominated the boards 42-28.
Hendrix Notes- Junior center
Gearen Littlefield recorded a career-high 17 points with six rebounds, a block and a steal.
- Senior guard
Drew Nikolovski came down with a career-best 12 rebounds, nine points and seven assists.
- Garrett finished with 10 points and three assists.
- Freshman forward
Bryce Batchelor scored nine points with two assists and a pair of blocks off the bench.
- Junior guard
Aaron Steele scored seven points and had a career-high six rebounds and a season-best five assists.
- Graduate forward
John Ogle finished with eight points.
- Smith had six points, six boards and three assists.
Millsaps Notes- guard Quinn Atkinson led the Majors with 14 points and five rebounds.
- Marc Robertson had 13 points, five boards and three assists.
- Trent Markwith finished with seven points, five rebounds and five assists.
- Logan Mancuso added eight points and two blocks off the bench.
Up NextHendrix will face first-place Birmingham-Southern College at 3 p.m. Sunday at home.
