SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Hendrix College women's soccer team tied Sewanee - The University of the South 1-1 in double overtime in the first round of the Southern Athletic Association Tournament, but the Tigers (8-8-2) move on by winning the penalty kick shootout 4-2.
Sewanee's Savannah Williams scored the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute on an assist from Elizabeth Eidson. The Warriors (11-7-1) tied it up in the 77th minute on goal from freshman forward
Hagan Griffith.
The third-seed Tigers outshot the sixth-seed Warriors 29-7 overall and 11-5 on goal. Hendrix junior goalkeeper
Jordan Rausch came up with four saves in the two overtimes to keep the Orange & Black in the game.
Although officially a tie, the game came down to penalty kicks to see who would advance to next weekend's semifinals. Sewanee started with Dalya LaRocque making her PK, followed by Griffith hitting hers. Both teams missed in the second round, and Tasha Saunders of the Tigers and Rausch both drilled their kicks to make it 2-2.
Sewanee's Nikki Johnston made hers in the fourth round, but the Warriors missed theirs. Frances McDonald made it for the Tigers in the fifth round to win the PK round 4-2.
