SHERMAN, Texas - The Hendrix College softball team opened the 2016 season with a double-header split against Austin College Saturday afternoon. The Warriors (1-1) took the first game 11-4, but the host Kangaroos (3-1) rebounded to win the nightcap 12-8.
In game one, Hendrix scored in each of the first six innings. After a pair of runs in the first thanks to RBI-doubles by senior third baseman
Shelby Anderson and freshman catcher
Karli Sewell, the Warriors added another run in the second on a run-scoring triple from junior second baseman
Victoria Hughes.
Austin answered with two runs on two hits and two errors in the second. Anderson led the third off with a single and was driven in by sophomore
Morgan Maida to give the Ornage & Black and a 4-2 lead. The 'Roos knotted the game up at 4-4 in the bottom of the third.
Hendrix tacked on two runs in the fourth, taking advantage of three errors, and added two more runs on RBI-singles by Maida and Sewell. Austin committed four more errors in the sixth, leading to three more Warrior runs.
Hendrix outhit Austin 14-6. The 'Ross committed eight errors, while the Warriors made five.
In game two, Hendrix put up a pair of runs in the first, but Austin had five in the bottom of the frame. The 'Roos tacked on three more runs in the second to go up 8-2.
The Warriors closed the gap to 8-6 in the top of the third when Anderson hit a two-run home run and freshman shortstop
Jamie Johnson added a two-run single. Austin added two more in the third and two in the fifth to go up 12-6. Johnson hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh for the final score of 12-8.
Hendrix outhit AC 15-12 in game two.
Anderson went 4-for-5 with two runs, two RBI, two doubles and a home run for nine total bases, tied for the fourth most in a game in school history.
Hendrix Notes- Freshman
Emily Stockalper picked up the complete game win in the first contest. She struck out five and allowed one earned run over seven innings.
- Anderson was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a RBI and a steal in the first game. She moved into fifth on the Warrior career list with 97 runs scored and into 10th with 128 hits. Anderson is now second in the career doubles list with 39 and trails the record by four.
- Hughes went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a RBI and a triple in game one.

Savannah Draud scored three times in the opener and went 3-for-5 in game two. She struck out six batters in four innings of relief in game two.
- Maida drove in a pair on two hits in game one.
- Sewell went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI in the opener. She was 2-for-3 with two runs and another double in game two.
- Johnson went 3-for-3 with four RBI and a homer in her first career game.
Austin Notes- Catcher Briana Hernandez was 2-for-2 with a RBI and two walks in the first game. She had two more hits, including a double in the nightcap.
- Sophia Hernandez took the loss in game one, allowing 11 hits, four earned runs, three walks and striking out five in five innings of relief.
- Center fielder Lauren Mara went 3-for-4 with three RBI in game two.
- Katherine Wright (2-0) earned the by allowing 15 hits, five earned runs and four strikeouts over 6.2 innings in game two.
- Victoria Herrera struck out the final batter of the game to earn the save.
Up NextHendrix will take on the University of Dallas in a double-header in Irving, Texas Sunday.
