GEORGETOWN, Texas - Playing in their first game of the 2016 season, the Hendrix College men's lacrosse lost an 8-7 heartbreaker in overtime to Southwestern University on Saturday afternoon.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the first quarter, but the Warriors (0-1) scored three straight in the second to take a 4-1 lead at halftime. Senior midfielder
Travis Rabun and junior midfielder
Alex Ortenstone netted two goals each in the first half.
The Orange & Black took a 5-1 lead early in the third when senior
Zachary Baier scored on an assist from freshman
Cole Cramer. The Pirates (1-0) scored the next two before Rabun answered with his third goal of the game to give Hendrix a 6-3 lead headed into the fourth.
Southwestern scored twice in the first 44 seconds of the fourth to make the game 6-5. Rabun scored his fourth goal of the game at the 13 minute mark to push the Warrior lead back to two. Jared Welsh scored a man-up goal for the Pirates with 7:10 left and Matthew Montagne tied the game with 32 seconds left to force overtime.
In the extra period, SU outshot Hendrix 7-0 and finally got the game winner with 1:02 left when Welsh assist Austin Fox' game-winner.
For the game, the Warriors outshot the Pirates 36-35 and the teams were even at 22-22 in shots on goal. Hendrix won the ground ball battle 35-26 and faceoffs 11-6. Southwestern committed two less turnovers 15-13.
Hendrix Notes- Rabun's four goals tied his career high. He also became the third player in school history to reach 100 career points.
- Ortenstone picked up six ground balls and won 3-of-4 faceoffs to go with his two scores.
- Sophomore midfielder
Jason Blatt went 8-for-11 on faceoffs and picked up eight ground balls.
- Senior keeper
Joe Takacs recorded 14 saves in goal and had five ground balls.
- Six Warriors caused a turnover each -
Andrew Davidson, Blatt,
Reed Mershon, Rabun, Ortenstone and
Thomas Adamo.
Southwestern Notes- Kai Knight-Turcan led the Pirates with two goals and an assist.
- Montagne finished with two goals and five ground balls.
- Charlie Fisher recorded 15 saves to get the win in goal.
- Jordan Riggs led SU with six ground balls.
- Dakota Skinner caused three turnovers.
Up NextHendrix will compete in their home opener next Saturday against Rockhurst at 3 p.m.
