SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Hendrix College softball team opened the Southern Athletic Association series with Sewanee - The University of the South with an 11-0 win on Friday.
Freshman pitcher
Emily Stockalper (5-5) struck out a season-high nine batters and allowed just five hits and one walk in her second shutout of the year for the Warriors (5-10, 2-5). The Warriors outhit the Tigers (0-7, 0-7) 10-5 for the game. Char Shirley (0-4) took the loss for Sewanee.
Sophomore
Morgan Maida hit a two-run double for the Warriors in the top of the first.
In the second, Hendrix added three more runs to go up 5-0. Sophomore center fielder
Madi Fires led off by being hit and stole second. Sophomore first baseman
Deva Bharne followed with a double, scoring Fires. Freshman shortstop
Skye Miller singled and moved to second on a throw with Bahrne moving to third. Freshman catcher
Karli Sewell plated Bharne with a ground ball. Hughes knocked in Miller with a ground out as well.
Miller reached on an error and stole second in the fourth. Sewell doubled her in to make the game 6-0.
Sewell led the sixth off with a walk and later scored on a Maida base hit.
Hendrix added four more runs in the the seventh on three hits and an error. Sewell was hit by a pitch and knocked in by a double from junior second baseman
Victoria Hughes. Anderson followed with another double, scoring Hughes. Anderson scored on a passed ball and sophomore left fielder
Rebecca Maeder scored on a single from Fires.
Hendrix Notes- The Warriors had five doubles on the day and six stolen bases
- Maida went 3-for-4 with three driven in.
- Hughes was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs, two walks, two RBI and two stolen bases.
- Sewell had two RBI with a two runs scored.
- Miller stole a base and scored twice.
Sewanee Notes- Center fielder Caroline Holmes went 2-for-3 for the Tigers.
- Courtney Saunders hit a double
Up NextHendrix and Sewanee will play a double-header on Saturday beginning at noon.
