JACKSON, Miss. - The Hendrix College football team moved to 3-0 on the season by defeating Millsaps College 42-14 in the first game of the Southern Athletic Association schedule at Harper Davis Stadium Saturday.
On the Warriors' second play of the game, senior running back
Dayton Winn ran for a 66-yard touchdown to set the tone of the game. Winn's run was the second longest in school history.
A 25-yard rush by Winn set up a 32-yard touchdown pass from senior
Seth Peters to senior
Ethan Hoppe to give Hendrix a 14-0 lead with 6:00 left in the second quarter.
The Majors (1-3) answered with a 45-yard touchdown run by Andrew Warren. Hendrix came right back with a Peters 51-yard pass to junior
Ben Luedtke to make the game 21-6 before halftime.
Peters, from Greenbrier, Ark., had another big touchdown play, connecting with junior
Nate Hodapp for a 34-yard score at 8:27 in the third. The Orange & Black had a nine-play, 80-yard drive that went into the fourth quarter, ending in a
Mason Millsap four-yard scramble.
On the first play of their next drive, Peters found senior
Spencer Smith on a 67-yard bomb, giving the Warriors a 42-6 advantage.
Millsaps quarterback Ty Proctor ran for a 25-yard score late in the game for the final 42-14 score.
The Warrior offense broke a couple school records as they averaged 9.1 yards per play and 7.3 yards per rush.They finished with 546 yards on 60 plays, while giving up 370 yards on 74 snaps.
Hendrix Notes
- Winn finished with 152 yards on 11 carries for a school-record 13.8 yards per carry. It was 21st career 100-yard game.
- Peters was 25-of-32 for 350 yards and four touchdwons.
- Hoppe finished with a career-high nine catches and 109 yards.
