SHERMAN, Texas. - The Hendrix College softball team kicked off the 2017 season with a double-header sweep of Austin College on Saturday. The Warriors (2-0) won the first game 5-2, then defeated the Kangaroos (1-5) 12-10 in a wild nightcap.
In game one, Austin catcher Cassidy McDaris hit a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth to give them an early lead. Hendrix scored four runs in the top of the sixth on four hits and a pair of errors. The Warriors added another run in the top of the seventh when freshman
Hannah Billings led off with a pinch hit single. Senior third baseman
Sydney Ozersky followed with a RBI single to left center to make the game 5-2.
Sophomore pitcher
Emily Stockalper (1-0) earned the win with six strikeouts and allowing three hits, one earned run and four walks over seven innings. Tori Herrera took the loss for the 'Ross, giving up 12 hits, two earned runs and three walks with three strikeouts.
Game two was a wild affair, with Hendrix outhitting Austin 16-10.
The Warriors scored in the top of the first after senior second baseman
Victoria Hughes reached on an error, stole a base, was bunted over by junior right fielder
Bryanna Carlisle and scored on a double from sophomore catcher
Karli Sewell. The 'Roos tied it up in the bottom of the frame with a solo homer from catcher Beth Massey to lead off the frame.
AC went up 4-1 with three runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the second. Pitcher Jordan Proctor had a two-run single in the inning. The Warriors sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth and registered seven hits and scored six runs to go up up 7-4. Carlisle connected on a two-run triple and freshman shortstop
Taylor Oglesby hit a run-scoring double. Hendrix made it 8-4 in the fifth after Stockalper singled and later scored on an error.
The 'Roos tied it up in the bottom of the fifth with four runs on three hits and a pair of errors. Center fielder Kat Wright hit a three-run home run to right field. Ozersky answered with a solo home run to left to start the sixth to give the Warriors a 9-8 victory.
The lead did not last long as AC scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to go back up 10-9.
In the top of the seventh, freshman center fielder
Aubrey Brink led off with a single, and Hughes reached on a bunt single. After a sacrifice from Carlisle, Sewell cleared the bases with a double to left field to give Hendrix the lead. Oglesby drove in the final run of the game with double, plating junior pinch runner
Rebecca Maeder.
Sophomore
Savannah Draud (1-0) picked up the win for the Warriors, tying her career-high with six strikeouts and allowing five hits and three earned runs in five innings of relief. Herrera (0-4) took the loss, giving up 10 hits and five earned runs with five strikeouts in 3.1 innings of relief.
Hendrix Game One Notes
- Hughes went 3-for-3 and was hit by a pitch. She stole a base, breaking the school career record with 39 steals.
- Ozersky went 3-for-3 with a double, run scored and RBI.
- Stockalper had a good game at the plate, connecting on two base hits. with a run scored and a RBI.
Austin Game One Notes
- McDaris had a hit and drove in both runs.
- Kat Wright and Beth Massey both recorded singles.
Hendrix Game Two Notes
- Sewell tied for the second most hits in program history by going 4-for-5 with four RBI, a run and a pair of doubles.
- Oglesby went 3-for-4 with two RBI, two doubles and a steal.
- Hughes recorded two hits and scored three times with a RBI. She also stole two more bases, bringing her career record to 41.
- Ozersky had two hits as well, including the solo home run.
- Brink scored twice and Carlisle drove in two with a triple and recorded two sac bunts.
- Stockalper went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and a RBI.
Austin Game Two Notes
- Massey went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. She had a double and a home run.
- Proctor went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
