CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College baseball team lost a slugfest to Grinnell College 14-8 at Warrior Field on Monday afternoon.
The visiting Pioneers (4-4) outhit the Warriors (8-13) 21-14.
Grinnell started the game with five runs on six hits and error while batting around in the first game. Hendrix picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Sophomore shortstop
Jorge Leon led off by reaching on an error and scored on a double to left center by junior center fielder
Drew Judson. Sophomore first baseman
Josh Walker followed with a hit up the middle, plating Judson.
The Pioneers went up 8-2 in the second with three runs on three hits. Judson led the third off with a double and scored on a base hit by junior right fielder
Matthew Lillard to make it 8-3.
Catcher Matt Hammond led off the top of the fourth with a base hit, stole second and later scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Carson Gampell to give GC a 9-3 advantage. In the bottom of the fourth, senior catcher
James Martin led off with an infield single and sophomore third baseman
Dylan Bowers was hit by a pitch. Leon singled to load the bases and Walker hit a sac fly to center to score Martin.
GC scored two more times on two hits and an error in the sixth to go up 11-4. Martin led the bottom of the sixth off by reaching on an error and moved to second on a wild pitch. Bowers followed with a base hit and Martin scored on a ground ball off of Leon's bat. With two outs in the seventh, junior designated hitter
Colin Brown was hit by a pitch and freshman
Sean Dehne singled. Martin followed with a base hit, scoring Brown to make the game 11-6.
The Pioneers added two more runs in the eighth and one in the ninth. Hendrix scored the final runs in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run single by Judson.
Grinnell's Sam Galanek (1-0) earned the win by throwing four innings of relief and giving up six hits and two runs. Freshman starter
Josh Gonzales (1-1) took the loss for Hendrix.
