CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College men's lacrosse team broke the school record in victories by holding off Centre College 8-7 at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium Friday night.
The Warriors (8-6, 3-3), under first-year interim head coach
Anthony Biondo, broke the old record of seven victories set by the 2014 squad.
Hendrix scored just 2:08 into the game when senior attacker
Alex Ortenstone found the cage. The Colonels (5-7, 2-4) tied it up with 1:02 left in the first quarter. The teams were tied 3-3 before Ortenstone scored a fastbreak goal on an assist from senior defenseman
Michael Riley at the 4:17 mark in the second quarter. The Warriors went up 5-3 before the half on an
T. Michael Thomas goal and assist from Ortenstone.
Centre's Dominic Peluso scored the only goal of the third quarter to make the game 5-4.
Hendrix led 7-5 after Ortenstone's fourth goal of the game with 4:06 left. Peluso found the cage at 2:52 to make the game 7-6. Sophomore attacker
Drew Scanlan gave the Orange & Black an insurance goal on a pass from sophomore
Matt Latham with 1:36 remaining. Leland Gray scored the final goal of the game for the Colonels with 5.1 seconds left for the final 8-7 tally.
For the game, Hendrix recorded eight goals, five assists, 50 shots, 29 on goal, 43 ground balls, won nine faceoffs, 20 turnovers, 19 caused turnovers and were 19-of-24 on clear attempts.
Centre had seven goals, four assists, 35 shots, 17 on goal, 38 ground balls, 10 faceoffs, 28 turnovers, 11 caused turnovers and were 21-of-29 on clears. They also were 4-for-6 on man-up opportunities.
