Sewanee, TN - The Hendrix College women's basketball team battled the Sewanee Tigers in a SAA Conference match-up on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors (14-5, 6-2 SAA) were hoping to keep their current three game winning streak alive.
It was a 13-point game after two quarters of play with Hendrix clinging to the lead 47-33 as the teams rested and prepped for the final two quarters of competition.
Madison Martin was having a great start to her game again as the Warriors broke for the locker room. The senior force played 15 minutes, collecting an early double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds)Â along with one steal. Senior
Leah Smith added 14 points of her own, to go along with two rebounds.
Things would continue to go in HC's favor as the third and fourth quarters progressed. Sewanee remained persistent, while Hendrix stayed vigilant knowing what was at stake. Entering the final two minutes of regulation, HC would hold a 22 point lead after senior
Heather Prowse made two free-throws sealing things for the Warriors, as all that was left to do was tack on free-throws and remain as airtight as possible on defense. Hendrix officially moved to (15-5, 7-2 SAA) with their eventual 91-73 win.
"The girls played extremely hard and aggressive today on both ends of the floor," said Head Coach
Drew Gaeng. "We executed really well in some big spurts to help put the game away."
Leading the day for the Warriors were likes of Smith, who peppered the score sheet with 25 points, four rebounds, a steal, and a 4-4, 100% free-throw percentage; Martin, who finished a crisp double-double with 20 points and 16 rebounds, and
Vinessa Daniel, who saved her best points for last. Her 20 points and four assists proved large, as did her huge three-point shots.
Hendrix will be back in action on Friday, February 2nd as they travel across state lines to take on SAA conference foe, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. EST.
