Watanabe's Golden Goal Allows Hendrix to Take Down Oglethorpe in SAA Opener

CONWAY, Ark. - Hendrix hosted Oglethorpe Saturday afternoon in the opening Southern Athletic Association game for the Warriors. After trailing the entire opening half, the Warriors were able to fight back throughout the second half and force overtime as Alison Watanabe scored a game-ending golden goal 40 seconds into the first overtime as Hendrix defeated the Petrels, 13-12, and pick up a huge SAA victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Oglethorpe tallied the first three goals of the game in the first three minutes to take a 3-0 lead but Morgan Dasch and Watanabe soon put Hendrix within one goal, 3-2 with 25:15 left til halftime.
- The Petrels carded another 3-0 lead until Hannah Burroughs, Dasch and Calah Justice landed a 3-0 run of their own to bring Hendrix within one goal again, 6-5.
- Both teams tacked on one more goal before the opening half ended; Dasch scored with 2:31 left in a man-up opportunity as Hendrix trailed 7-6 at the break.
- Justice, Burroughs and Dasch carded another 3-0 run to open the second half as Hendrix held a 9-7 advantage with 24 minutes left in regulation.
- Justice tallied two more goals and Burroughs added another one as Hendrix held a 12-10 advantage with 12:58 left in regulation.
- Oglethorpe scored the final two goals in regulation to force overtime with both teams tied at 12-all. 
- After a draw control win by Sophie Mazzaro, Watanabe put a shot past the goalie for the sudden death victory as Hendrix comes back and takes down Oglethorpe, 13-12.

OF NOTE:
- Dasch tallied four goals and three assists in the win against Oglethorpe.
- Justice recorded a career-best four goals against the Petrels; also collected a ground ball and caused two turnovers.
- Dasch accounted for six of Hendrix's 19 ground balls while Mackenzie Chandler, Bri McDonough and Erin Rossics logged two ground balls each.
- Alexis Truitt tallied 12 saves in 60:40 of action to earn the tough victory.
- Burroughs finished with three goals against the Petrels while accounting for an assist as well.
- Watanabe scored two goals Saturday but none bigger than the game-winning strike in overtime; also an assist and a pair of caused turnovers.
- The Warriors won 18 draw controls while Oglethorpe won just eight.
 
WHO'S NEXT:
The Warriors hit the road for a quick two-game road trip. First up, Hendrix takes on Centre from Danville, Ky. in another SAA tilt. The match Saturday is set to begin at 11 a.m.
