Women's Lacrosse Falls to the Pirates in Season Opener

CONWAY, Ark. - In the first game of the year, Hendrix hosted the Southwestern (Texas) Pirates Saturday afternoon inside the confines of Warrior Field. Alison Watanabe put Hendrix up 2-1 early on and Hannah Burroughs carded the third goal for the Warriors but six consecutive Pirate goals put the road team on top, 7-3 just over halfway through the first half. After leading 10-4 at the break, Southwestern scored six more times in the final 30 minutes as the Pirates defeated the Warriors, 16-7. Hendrix falls to 0-1 on the young season while the Pirates improve to 1-0.

OF NOTE:
- Sophie Mazzaro recorded the assist on Watanabe's first score before Calah Justice recorded assists on the next two Hendrix goals.
- Burroughs scored her second goal of the year with 11:13 left in the half as Hendrix trailed 7-4.
- Trailing 10-4 at the break, Watanabe struck for a hat trick just over five minutes into the second half before Burroughs did as well just 30 seconds later as the Warriors trail 11-6 with 24 minutes left.
- Watanabe scored the final goal for Hendrix with 3:01 left as the Warriors fell 16-7.

BOX SCORE NOTABLE:
- Watanabe recorded four goals on the day off seven shots while Burroughs scored three times on seven shots. Watanabe and Burroughs also combined for 10 shots on goal.
- Laycee Carpenter, JJ Tufu and Hagan Griffith each recorded a team-best four ground balls while Nadine Matena accounted for a team-high five caused turnovers in her debut.
- Griffith recorded a second-best three caused turnovers in her first career game.
- Burroughs went 2-for-2 on free position shots against the Pirates.
- Alexis Williams recorded 17 saves in all 60 minutes in goal for the Warriors.

WHO'S NEXT:
Hendrix travels to Atlanta, Ga. Feb. 29 to take on Oglethorpe in the Southern Athletic Association opener.
