Smith Ford Match Preview: Berry

CONWAY, Ark. - Hendrix hosts No. 15 Berry (Ga.) in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) action Friday inside Grove Gymnasium at 6:30 p.m. CT.

Admission is free, but due to COVID-19 safety protocols, capacity is limited to 75 percent, or 275. Registration for tickets is only available online. The gate at the venue opens 30 minutes prior to first serve. All spectators are required to wear a mask over the nose and mouth and physically distance at all times, including while seated in the stands. Reserved seating on the north end of the gym exists for Hendrix students, faculty and staff. No food or drink except bottled water is allowed inside the gym. Spectators are expected to stay off the court before, during and after each match and must vacate the venue immediately following its conclusion. No interaction with student-athletes is permitted at the match site.

Along with live statistics, the match is televised online via the Warrior Sports Network.

A "White Out" is in effect Friday inside Grove Gymnasium. Hendrix fans in attendance are encouraged to wear white.

ABOUT HENDRIX

Sewanee (Tenn.) defeated the Warriors in four sets Sunday in SAA action by scores of 26-24, 26-24, 24-26 and 25-12, snapping Hendrix's win streaks in the series of three-matches overall and six on the road. Sadie Walker tallied 16 kills, her fourth-straight match in double figures. Avery Stephens pumped in a season-high 13 kills. Camryn Presley had a match-high 23 digs, while Sam Friedl and Peyton Nance added 12 and 10, respectively. Claire Smith dished out a match-high 28 assists and Kyler Greenlee 11. Presley also had three service aces. Grace House broke the Hendrix record for block assists with nine. Walker and Presley each had five, Stephens four and Catalina Williams three. The Warriors totaled 28 block assists, setting a new program record.

The Warriors, currently in fourth place in the league standings, need two wins in their final four conference matches to secure a home contest in the SAA Tournament quarterfinals.

Hendrix ranks second in the SAA in per set averages for aces (1.95), digs (16.94) and attacks (37.19). It ranks 63rd nationally in attacks per set.

Friedl is second in the SAA and 74th nationally in digs per set (4.97). House is sixth in the league in blocks (55). Walker ranks seventh in the SAA in kills per set (2.94).

Hendrix is 18-5 at home in the last three seasons, including 6-2 this year.

Newberry's 17-member squad is represented by four states - Arkansas (8), Texas (5), Tennessee (3) and California (1).

ABOUT BERRY

No. 13 Emory (Ga.) won at No. 15 Berry in five sets Tuesday by scores of 25-23, 25-15, 14-25, 24-26 and 15-11, snapping the Vikings' eight-match win streak overall. Jazzy Innis and Molly Bergin each recorded 17 kills. Emily Rapach had 47 assists, and Laura Beier had 46 digs. 

Dating back to 2019, Berry has won 13-straight true road matches.

In the last two seasons, the Vikings are 15-0 outside the Cage Center, including 12-0 in true road matches.

Berry leads the SAA in blocks per set (2.31), hitting percentage (0.236), kills per set (13.03) and opponent hitting percentage (0.097). Nationally it ranks fifth in blocks per set, 16th in opponent hitting percentage, 23rd in kills per set and 24th in hitting percentage.

Beier leads the SAA and ranks third in Division III in digs per set (6.41). Cypress Guenther leads the league and ranks 52nd nationally in hitting percentage (0.351). Bergin leads the SAA in kills per set (3.24). Rapach ranks second in the conference and 21st nationally in assists per set (10.05).

LAST MEETING

Hendrix lost at then-No. 14 Berry, 3-0, in SAA action Oct. 2, 2021. The Vikings won by scores of 25-23, 25-9 and 25-14.

Innis totaled 12 kills and a 0.611 hitting percentage. Beier and Kate Whittle compiled 18 and 10 kills, respectively. Rapach dished out 33 assists.

Presley and Walker each had six kills. Nance came up with 10 digs, while Presley added nine. Smith and Greenlee each dished out nine assists. House had three block assists.

SERIES NOTES

Presley has averaged 11.3 kills and 15.5 digs in four-career matches against the Vikings.
Berry is making its first trip to Grove Gymnasium since Oct. 5, 2019, a streak of seven matches.
Berry is Hendrix's first ranked opponent to play in Conway since the then-sixth-ranked Vikings made the trip to Grove Gymnasium in 2019.
