SAA 10-year anniversary: Winn's career day

ATLANTA - To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA), the conference is looking back throughout 2021-22 at some of the best moments, teams and performances in league history. On Thursday, the SAA highlighted one of the greatest individual performances in league history.

On Oct. 3, 2015, former Hendrix running back Dayton Winn racked up 437 all-purpose yards in a 51-48 win at Centre (Ky.). He scampered for 283 rushing yards on 52 carries, tallying five touchdowns on the day. Winn also returned six kickoffs for a total of 154 yards. He still holds the Hendrix and SAA single-game records for rushes and rushing yards. Winn set the school record for rushing touchdowns and tied the league mark for most rushing touchdowns in a game and still sits atop the record book in that category in a three-way tie. He also set the program record for all-purpose yards, all-purpose attempts (58), touchdowns scored (5) and points scored (30) while tying for second in kickoff returns (6) and ranking fifth in kickoff return yards (154).

In the game, Winn helped Hendrix set program records for rushes (65), rushing yards (360) and tie the mark for rushing touchdowns (5) while ranking fourth in offensive plays (92) and all-purpose attempts (87), fifth in all-purpose yards (779), sixth in total offense (622), tied for seventh in touchdowns scored (7), eighth in points scored (51) and tied for eighth in kickoff returns (7).

Winn, who helped Hendrix win the 2015 SAA title and reach the Division III Football Championship first round, finished his junior campaign setting single-season program records for rushes (289), rushing yards (1,761), rushing yards per game (160.1), all-purpose yards (2.732) and all-purpose yards per game (248.4) while trying the mark for punt returns (11). His 2015 single-season ranks are currently as follows:
  • 18 rushing touchdowns (2nd);
  • 32 points scored (2nd);
  • 22 touchdowns scored (2nd);
  • 6.09 average yards per carry (3rd);
  • 532 kickoff return yards (3rd);
  • 23 kickoff returns (3rd);
  • 81 punt return yards (3rd);
  • 22 touchdowns responsible for (5th);
  • 1,757 yards of total offense (6th);
  • 7.36 yards per punt return (6th);
  • 159.7 yards of total offense per game (8th);
  • 23.13 yards per kickoff return (8th).
Winn, the 2015 SAA Offensive Player of the Year and semifinalist for the Gagliardi Trophy, led the country with 248.4 all-purpose yards per game. The All-SAA first team selection was second in the nation in rushing yards, fifth in rushing yards per game and 10th in scoring per game (12.0). He led the SAA in every major rushing category and broke the then-SAA records in rushing yards and all-purpose yards.
 
Winn holds the Hendrix all-time records for rushes (829), rushing yards (5,009), rushing touchdowns (63), rushing yards per game (125.2), average yards per rush (6.04), all-purpose yards (8,296), all-purpose yards per game (207.4), points (456), touchdowns scored (76), punt returns (40), punt return yards (307), kickoff returns (81) and kickoff return yards (1,759). He is second in average yards per punt return (7.68), third in total offense (5,010), touchdowns responsible for (77), total offense per game (125.2) and kickoff return touchdowns (2), tied for third in receptions (119), fourth in total offense per play (6.03), sixth in receptions per game (2.97), seventh in average yards per kickoff return (21.72) and eighth in receiving yards (1,221) and receiving touchdowns (10).
