Madi Pierce each scored 19 points Friday despite their team's 85-51 loss at Fontbonne (Mo.) inside Mabee Gymnasium. The Warriors fell to 1-1 all-time in the series after playing the Griffins for the first time since Dec. 30, 2017.
Rylee Stafford ended with 25 points on 8-of-17 shooting and a 6-of-6 clip from the free throw line to go along with three steals for Fontbonne (2-3). Rylee Pickett had 19 points and was perfect shooting overall (5-of-5), from beyond the arc (4-of-4) and at the stripe (5-of-5). Kourtney White added 16 points and was also perfect (7-of-7) from the field.
The Griffins shot better than 60 percent in each of the third and fourth quarters and 54.9 percent (28-of-51) for the game. Fontbonne hit 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from 3-point range and 19-of-28 free throws.Â
Burns finished 9-of-16 shooting inside the arc in addition to a game-high seven rebounds. Pierce shot 7-of-12 overall, including 3-of-4 from 3-point land, to go along with five rebounds.
Zoe Mojaver dished out a career-high five assists.Â
Pierce and
Kelsey Korb were each 2-of-2 from the free throw line.
Hendrix (1-3) shot 32.3 percent (21-of-65) overall and held an edge in offensive rebounds, 11-4.
The Warriors shot 50 percent (8-of-16) in the first quarter and led twice in the period. Hendrix answered a Griffins' 7-0 run with a 6-0 spurt, as a Mojaver fastbreak layup tied the game at 14 with 3:14 on the clock. Pierce canned a trey with 36 seconds to go, cutting a Fontbonne lead to one, 20-19, after 10 minutes of play. The Griffins shot 8-of-9 from the stripe in the period.
A Burns old-fashioned 3-point play gave her team a 22-20 edge less than a minute into the second quarter. Her jumper with 3:56 to go before halftime made the score 26-23, but Fontbonne closed on an 11-2 spurt to lead 34-28 at intermission.
The Griffins opened the first 5:06 of the third quarter on a 14-0 run to pull away. Fontbonne shot 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the floor, including 4-of-5 from distance, in the period.
The Griffins shot 60 percent (9-of-15) from the field and 8-of-14 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
Hendrix concludes a four-game road trip Saturday at Webster (Mo.). Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. CT.
