Kennedi Burns scored 25 points, and
Madi Pierce notched a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Hendrix to a 63-51 win over Dallas (Texas) on Tuesday inside Grove Gymnasium. The Warriors snapped a three-game skid overall and improved to 9-2 all-time against the Crusaders, including 5-0 on Garrison Court.
Tuesday marked the beginning of a stretch where the Warriors play seven of their next nine contests inside Grove Gymnasium.
Burns finished one point shy of her career-high after shooting 8-of-14 overall and 8-of-9 from the free throw line to go along with seven rebounds and two steals. She and
Caroline Wendt each blocked two of their team's seven rejections. Burns scored 13 points after intermission, shooting 3-of-4 inside the arc and 7-of-8 from the stripe.
Pierce tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds, her third double-double this season and sixth of her career. She shot 10-of-11 from the charity stripe, both career-highs. Fifteen of her 19 came after halftime, as she was 8-of-9 from the line.
Rachel Woppman kicked in seven points on 3-of-4 shooting inside the paint in the victory.
Jayla King grabbed nine rebounds, and
Mia Maxwell had six. Maxwell also had three steals.
Hendrix (2-4) dropped the hammer in the fourth quarter, outscoring Dallas (1-3) 23-12 while shooting 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from the floor and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the stripe. The Crusaders shot just 9.5 percent (2-of-21) from the field and 0-of-10 from distance. The Warriors opened the frame on an 8-0 run, expanding a one-point advantage at the beginning of the period into a 48-39 upper hand courtesy of an
Alicia McCloria fastbreak basket with 7:20 to play. Hendrix's largest lead of the game came with 23 seconds to go after Pierce converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to make the score 63-50.
Dallas was 0-of-16 from 3-point range after halftime and just 1-of-30 in the game.Â
The Warriors shot 36.5 percent (19-of-52) overall and 76.7 percent (23-of-30) from the foul line. The Orange and Black had 12 assists on 19 made baskets. The 23 made free throws were the most for Hendrix since canning 31 against Sewanee (Tenn.) on Jan. 4, 2019. Hendrix held an edge in rebounds (49-45) and flipped the script on former Warriors assistant and current Dallas head coach Bri Calver and the Crusaders from the first meeting eight days ago, tallying more bench points (9-5), points in the paint (26-20) and second chance points (10-8).
Canai McPherson went for 23 points in the loss, shooting 0-of-9 from beyond the arc but 11-of-17 from the stripe to go along with six steals. Camille Fowler had 10 points and was 0-of-5 from deep but 6-of-6 from the free throw line. McPherson, Fowler and Alyssa Sullivan each grabbed six rebounds. Imani Hardin pulled down 10 rebounds and had three blocks.
The Crusaders shot 22.1 percent (15-of-68) overall and 69 percent (20-of-29) from the charity stripe.
Each team totaled 10 steals.
Hendrix hosts Centenary (La.) on Nov. 28. Tip-off for the second game between the squads in 14 days is set for 1 p.m. CT.
