Birmingham-Southern defeats Hendrix

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Birmingham-Southern (Ala.) defeated Hendrix, 128-84, on Saturday in the first of two Southern Athletic Association contests between the teams in a 24-hour span inside Bill Battle Coliseum.

"We had a few tough stretches in the game that obviously really hurt us tonight," Hendrix head coach Drew Gaeng said. "Playing against this style is such a rollercoaster, and we weren't consistent enough to sustain more spurts in our favor. I was proud of our effort tonight, but we need to find a way to play better tomorrow."

Birmingham-Southern (3-9, 1-6 SAA) outscored Hendrix (0-7, 0-7 SAA) 34-13 in the second quarter to pull away and break a tie at 23 after 10 minutes.

Josie Wannemuehler scored 20 points off the bench for the Panthers on 8-of-12 shooting and a 3-of-4 mark from 3-point range. Anna Beth Giles scored 17 points and was 7-of-12 from the floor. Audra Putman added 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from deep. Alexia Hood ended with 10 points in a reserve role.

Cassady Quintana grabbed 10 rebounds for Birmingham-Southern, which shot 42.7 percent (50-of-117) overall, 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from beyond the arc and 10-of-22 from the free throw line.

Madi Pierce finished with 13 points to pace four Warriors in double figures. Kennedi Burns and Rachel Woppman each scored 11, while Anissa Gutierrez had 10.

Caroline Wendt grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds off the bench, while Pierce and Burns pulled down eight apiece.

Hendrix shot 46.3 percent (31-of-67) overall and 20-of-31 from the charity stripe to go along with 16 assists and 59 rebounds. All were season-highs. The 84 points was also a season-high for Gaeng's squad.

The second contest between the squads is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
