Hendrix sweeps Millsaps to open season

CONWAY, Ark. - Hendrix swept a pair of season-opening Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matches against Millsaps (Miss.) on Sunday inside Grove Gymnasium. The Warriors won the first match in three games by scores of 25-15, 25-20 and 25-20 before taking the second match in four sets by scores of 18-25, 25-16, 25-21 and 25-19. The Orange and Black have won eight-consecutive matches and improved to 9-2 at home and 15-5 in the last 20 matches in the series.

"I'm really proud of how well we played for our first time playing an opponent since 2019," Hendrix head coach Brittany Newberry said. "We had some bright moments and some revealing moments. I got to see our potential today, and it's very exciting. This was a full team effort. I can't ask for anything better than starting out 2-0."

In the first match, Hendrix's Camryn Presley tallied a double-double in her first collegiate match after totaling a match-high 12 kills and 15 digs. Maddie Tovar added 11 digs, while Sadie Walker had 10.

Walker posted a hitting percentage of .421 and Presley .393.

Jeanette McGrath contributed 20 digs in the victory, while Peyton Nance came up with 13. McGrath also had three service aces. Claire Smith dished out a match-high 34 assists.

Hannah Mattke recorded 22 digs in the loss, while Brenna Macaluso had 10. Mary Tebbe dished out 21 assists.

The Majors netted seven reception errors.

In match two, Presley recorded another double-double, pouring in a match-high 17 kills and 12 digs. Smith also tallied a double-double with 15 digs and a match-high 43 assists.

Walker scored 13 kills, and Allison Long added 10 on a .421 hitting percentage for Hendrix (2-0, 2-0 SAA).

McGrath tied for a match-high with 24 digs, one of five Warriors in double figures along with Nance (15) and MaKenzie Presley (12).

Gabby Deas came up with 10 kills for Millsaps (0-2, 0-2 SAA).

Mattke had 24 digs, while Macaluso had 16.

Tebbe contributed 39 assists.

The Majors recorded seven blocking errors.

Hendrix travels to No. 10 Berry (Ga.) for a doubleheader March 13. First serve is set for 10 a.m. CT.
