JACKSON, Miss. - In his first-career start under center,
Jacob Wood accounted for 364 yards of total offense and three touchdowns, leading Hendrix to its fifth-straight season opening win Saturday following a 37-27 victory over Millsaps (Miss.) at Harper Davis Field. The Warriors, who have won three-consecutive Southern Athletic Association (SAA) games, improve to 7-1 in season openers and 6-2 all-time against the Majors under
Buck Buchanan.
Wood ended 17-of-29 through the air for 218 yards and two touchdowns to go along with 146 yards on 15 carries and a score.
Wood posted career-highs in attempts, completions, passing yards, passing touchdowns, rushes, rushing yards, total offense and total touchdowns.
Kip VanHoose rushed 13 times for 30 yards and a touchdown in the win, while
Parker Turley also rushed for a score.Â
Blake Hinton posted his eighth-career 100-yard receiving game for Hendrix (1-0, 1-0 SAA) after hauling in seven passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns.
Chad McGonigal had two receptions for 38 yards for the Orange and Black, and
Colton Phillips recorded five receptions for 34 yards.
The Warriors came up with 391 yards of total offense, with 173 coming on the ground. Buchanan's offense was a perfect 5-of-5 in the red zone with four touchdowns, converted 53.3 percent (8-of-15) on third down and dominated time of possession, holding the ball for 10 minutes longer than Millsaps (0-1, 0-1 SAA).
Tanner Barrett totaled a career-high 10 tackles in the victory.
Josue Munoz recorded a sack.
Adonnis Butler came up with a tackle for loss, while
Brooks Parham,
Mason Adams and
Dawson West each had 0.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage. Butler also had two quarterback hurries.Â
Dalton Lindelof recorded an interception.
Amryn Jeffrey was 19-of-34 passing for 206 yards and four touchdowns with one interception in defeat.
Jaidon Horton tallied 45 yards on 12 carries for the Majors.
Austin Russell had nine catches for 128 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. Moise Tezzo had five catches for 28 yards and a score.
Millsaps was limited to just 267 yards of total offense, including 61 on the ground and 2.7 yards per rush.
Liam Vincifora came up with 10 tackles, a sack and two tackles for loss for the Majors.
Hendrix hosts Austin (Texas) in its home opener Feb. 13. Kickoff is slated for noon CT.
