No. 25 Hendrix splits DH with Oglethorpe

ATLANTA - UR/#25 Hendrix split the first two games of a four-game series with Oglethorpe (Ga.) on Saturday at Anderson Field. The Warriors won the first Southern Athletic Association (SAA) contest, 8-1, but the Stormy Petrels took the second game, 3-2.

In game one, Tyler Webb had a two-run double in the top of the first inning to give Hendrix a 2-0 lead. Kyle Kirk scored on a fielding error in the second to make the score 3-0.

A Jonathan Cruz RBI triple in the bottom of the second got Oglethorpe on the board, but Webb drove in runs in the third and eighth innings to push his team's advantage to 5-1. A Rail Gilliam two-run single and Tyler Beard RBI single in the ninth concluded the scoring.

Gilliam finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Beard and Webb each had two hits. Webb drove in four.

Jack Hodgins (1-1) earned the win on the mound, allowing just one earned run on seven hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 7.1 innings. Zach Orlando (1) picked up the save after throwing 1.2 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief with three strikeouts and a walk.

Cruz and Gabe Bryant each had two hits.

Colin Stewart (1-3) pitched seven innings in the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits with five strikeouts and a hit batter. Reddon McLaurine allowed three earned runs on three hits with two walks and two hit batters in two innings of relief.

In game two, Alec Babb gave Oglethorpe (8-13, 4-6 SAA) a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a RBI single.

A Joseph Watts RBI single in the top of the sixth allowed Hendrix (5-10, 2-4 SAA) to tie the game at 1, but a Carson Weir (1) two-run shot to right in the bottom of the frame proved to be the game-winner.

Rally Miller scored on a dropped fly ball by Bryant with no outs in the seventh to cut his team's deficit to one. The Warriors loaded the bases with no outs but were unable to push across the tying run.

Three Stormy Petrels had two hits.

Weir (1-2) picked up the win on the mound, giving up two earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts and four walks and a hit batter in six innings. Colby James (2) got the save with an inning of hitless relief with a walk.

Four Hendrix players had one hit. Adam Bland drew two walks. Miller and Webb each scored once.

Andrei Stoyanow (1-2) suffered the loss after pitching 5.2 innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits with a Hendrix-record 11 strikeouts. Orlando threw 0.1 innings of relief and allowed only a walk.

The Warriors and Stormy Petrels conclude their series with a doubleheader Sunday but only the first game counting towards SAA standings. First pitch in game one is set for 10 a.m. CT, while the second affair is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
