BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Hendrix, which is receiving votes for the latest Top 25, ended No. 10 Birmingham-Southern's (Ala.) 16-match Southern Athletic Association (SAA) win streak following a four-set victory in the second match of Saturday's doubleheader inside Bill Battle Coliseum. The Panthers lost for the first time in league play since dropping a five-set match at home to the Warriors last season.
The Orange and Black improved to 6-1 in their last seven matches in Bill Battle Coliseum.
Hendrix (4-4, 4-4 SAA) took down Birmingham-Southern (7-1, 7-1 SAA) by scores of 22-25, 25-17, 25-21 and 25-23. Saturday's win marked the highest-ranked opponent the Warriors have defeated since ousting No. 2 Emory (Ga.) from the NCAA Championship in the Sweet 16 in 2015.
Brittany Newberry's squad has defeated three Top 25 teams in the last two seasons.
Camryn Presley and
Sadie Walker each had 12 kills in the win. Presley also poured in 14 digs in a double-double performance. Reigning SAA Defensive Player of the Week
Jeanette McGrath tallied 26 digs, while
MaKenzie Presley added 14.
Kyler Greenlee dished out a season-high 29 assists, and
Claire Smith contributed 18.
Allison Long and
Grace House ended with six block assists apiece, while C. Presley and Walker each tallied four,
Maddie Tovar three and
Loren Payne two.
The 26 block assists Saturday tied for the most by Hendrix since 2016. The 15 total blocks tied for the most in the last three seasons after Newberry's unit also posted 15 in the 2019 win in Bill Battle Coliseum.
Alyssa Coats put up a double-double in the loss, tallying 17 kills and as many digs. Kennedy Dickens and Gigi Fields each added 13 kills. Julia Shoemake came up with 24 digs. Ansleigh Dailey dished out 50 assists. Leah Nielsen totaled six block assists, while Rominey Willner had five and Dickens four.
The Panthers hit a season low .107.
Birmingham-Southern won the first match in three games by scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-18.
Coats put up 15 kills. Shoemake had 13Â digs. Dailey dished out 38 assists. Nielson had five block assists, while Coats had four.
C. Presley had nine kills and as many digs. McGrath also had nine digs. Smith dished out eight assists.
Hendrix returns to Grove Gymnasium on April 3 for the final home matches for McGrath, M. Presley, Long and Tovar when the Warriors welcome Centre (Ky.) for a doubleheader. First serve is set for 9 a.m. CT.
