Hendrix ties Centenary in season opener

CONWAY, Ark. - The Warriors and Centenary (La.), the reigning Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament champion, played to a scoreless draw after two overtimes Friday in the season opener for both teams in the Hendrix Invitational at Warrior Soccer Field. Matt Kern's squad snapped a two-game losing streak in lid-lifters and ended a skid of as many games in the series.

Hendrix (0-0-1) has posted two ties in its last three home games. The Orange and Black posted their first clean sheet since a 1-0 win over Webster (Mo.) on Sept. 8, 2019.

Zack Roberts totaled three shots for the Warriors, while Omar Pelayo and Eli Brizendine each had three. Roberts, Pelayo and Kristian Reed each had a shot on goal.

Manu Murga (0-0-1) played the first half between the pipes for the Orange and Black and made one save. James Leone was in net for the final 65 minutes and recorded five stops.

Three true freshmen - Murga, Griffen McKay and Yahir Munoz - started their first collegiate game, while another five - Leone, Gio Gutierrez, Martin Bode, Sam Snider and Austin Pettigrew - saw action.

Hendrix outshot the Gents, 15-14.

Four Centenary (0-0-1) players registered two shots apiece. Colton Howard had two on frame.

Sami Borchalli (0-0-1) went the distance in goal for the Gents and made three saves.

The Warriors host UT Dallas (Texas) on Sunday in the final game of the Hendrix Invitational for both teams. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. CT.
