Rasberry Jr. trey sinks Centre, 63-60

DANVILLE, Ky. - Darvis Rasberry Jr.'s third 3-pointer Friday, coming with 13 seconds left to play, propelled Hendrix to a 63-60 win over Centre (Ky.) on Friday as both teams began the back end of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) schedule. The Warriors have won three of the last four meetings against the Colonels and snapped a three-game skid in Alumni Gymnasium.

Hendrix (12-7, 5-3 SAA) has won five of eight true road games this season.

The Warriors scored the first six points of the second half and opened the first 5:39 of the period on a 12-2 run, as consecutive treys by Rasberry Jr. gave his team a 45-39 edge. A Seth Stanley bucket from distance midway through the half gave the Orange and Black their largest advantage of the night, 52-43.

Carter Weakley scored or assisted on eight-straight Hendrix points down the stretch. He canned back-to-back 3s, the second with 5:08 remaining, to keep the Warriors' upper hand at eight, 60-52.

Centre (9-8, 3-4 SAA) countered with eight-consecutive points, as a Dustin Gerald triple knotted the affair at 60 with 1:23 on the clock before Rasberry Jr.'s heroics. An R.J. Smith fadeaway 3 as time expired rimmed in and out, preserving Hendrix's first road victory in the series since a 64-62 triumph Jan. 15, 2017.

Stanley ended with 16 points, his ninth-consecutive game in double figures. He shot 3-of-5 from deep.

Stanley made one free throw, moving him into a tie with Joe Murphy for fifth on the program's all-time list with 397.

Stanley's two free throw attempts Friday gives him 485 in his career, which moves past Kerry Evans for seventh all-time. Stanley trails Danny Thomas (486) for sixth.

Stanley started his 77th-career game Friday, which ranks 10th all-time in program history.

Rasberry Jr. and Weakley each scored 15 points. Rasberry Jr. tallied a season-high in field goals (6) and 3-pointers (3), while Weakley posted career-highs in points (15), field goals (6), field goal attempts (11), 3-pointers (3) and 3-point attempts (8).

In the final 20 minutes, Rasberry Jr. scored 13 points, while Weakley had 10. Rasberry Jr. shot 5-of-7 from the field. Weakley was 4-of-7 from the floor, including 2-of-5 from 3.

Stanley, Rasberry Jr. and Weakley drained six field goals and three treys apiece.

Rasberry Jr. shot 6-of-9 overall, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc in the second half.

Carl Fitch pulled down 11 rebounds, one shy of his season-high, in the win. Seven of the 11 came in the final 20 minutes. Stanley and Alex Conrad each had seven and Rasberry Jr. six.

Fitch started his 79th-career game Friday, moving him past Harvell Howard, Janson Hightower and Luke Vance for sixth all-time in program history.

Fitch dished out a career-high five assists. Sean Coman and Jackson Parks each collected four, as the Warriors totaled 18 on 26 made field goals.

Hendrix has recorded 10 or more assists in five-straight games and nine of the last 10. The Warriors improved to 5-0 when recording 18 or more assists.

Stanley and Parks each had two steals.

Hendrix shot 43.8 percent (14-of-32) from the field in the first half and 36.1 percent (26-of-72) overall. The Warriors connected on 31.3 percent (10-of-32) of their 3-pointers and turned 13 Colonels' miscues into 16 points. Hendrix committed only seven turnovers, one shy of a season-best, and improved to 5-1 when recording nine or less. The Warriors outrebounded Centre 45-40, including 15-9 on the offensive glass, leading to 11 second chance points.

Rasberry Jr., Weakley and Parks combined for the Warriors' 36 bench points, compared to only five by Centre's reserves. Hendrix also held an edge in points in the paint, 26-18.

Gerald and Smith each ended with a double-double. Gerald totaled 24 points, while Smith had 16. Gerald and Smith each pulled down 12 boards.

Gerald shot 8-of-16 overall. He was 4-of-5 from 3 and the foul line. Smith shot 4-of-7 from the stripe.

Gerald dished out four assists and Smith three.

In the first half, the Colonels shot 50 percent (7-of-14) from beyond the arc and 40.6 percent (13-of-32) from the floor. 

Centre shot 36.4 percent (20-of-55) overall, 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from 3 and 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the foul line, going 4-of-6 in the first half and 6-of-10 in the second.

The Warriors erased a 16-7 first half deficit with 13-consecutive points as part of a larger 15-2 spurt in a 4:53 span.

Hendrix looks for its fourth-straight win against Sewanee (Tenn.) on Jan. 30. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. CT.
