Warriors Remain Second Heading into Final Weekend of Regular Conference Play

CONWAY, Ark. - This weekend the Warriors battled it out in Georgia with Oglethorpe and Berry, facing their first tie and loss of conference play.

Friday night the Warriors faced Oglethorpe. Reed Johnson opened up with the first shot of the game in the first minute, with the Stormy Petrels following up with a strong offensive attack. The Warriors however put up a fantastic defense, with James Leone making three saves before the end of the half. Coming into the second half, Oglethorpe opened up taking three quick shots. Mason Reid was able to take one for the Warriors that went wide of the goal. Oglethorpe then countered taking a few more shots before Jack Nolen and Zack Roberts each took a shot on goal in the 72nd and 73rd minute and the Warriors earned two corner kicks, taken by Holt Bliss and Mason Reid. The game ended in a scoreless draw, after a great defensive effort from the Warriors.

On Sunday the Warriors traveled to Rome, Georgia to face the Berry Vikings. The Vikings got an early goal, scoring off a corner kick in the 2nd minute of the game. Following that the game was pretty evenly matched with both teams having good offensive opportunities. Charlie Mata and Omar Pelayo took two shots and one shot, respectively, for the Orange and Black before the end of the half. However, none of the shots were able to find the back of the net and the Warriors went into halftime down 1-0. At the beginning of the half, the Vikings came out trying to score a safety goal, taking three consecutive shots. However, the Warriors were able to settle in and earned some attacking opportunities of their own with Joseph Avila taking the only shot on goal of the game for the Warriors. The final ten minutes of the game saw a strong effort from the Orange and Black, as they tried to tie up the game. They had a few opportunities that they were able to build up from the back. In the final 30 seconds, Austin Pettigrew took a shot that just missed high, and the Warriors dropped their first conference game of the season.

Coming out of the weekend, James Leone is currently ranked second in the SAA for total saves (57), saves per game (4.38), and goalie minutes played (1164:31). Leone also holds third in the SAA and 17th and 26th nationally for total shutouts (6) and save percentage (85.1%).

The Warriors are currently second in the SAA with a conference record of 4-1-1 and an overall record of 7-3-3, their best performance in Warrior Men's Soccer program history. The Orange and Black will be hosting the Rhodes Lynx this Saturday for the final regular season conference game of the year, with post-season conference tournament play just around the corner. The game will begin at approximately 7:30 pm CST. Seniors Zack Roberts, Luis Civallero, and Ethan Nelson will be honored prior to the game for their contributions over the past four years to the program as part of senior day.
