MEMPHIS, Tenn. - RV/#23 Rhodes (Tenn.) held off Hendrix, 68-62, on Tuesday in the regular season and Southern Athletic Association (SAA) finale for both teams inside Mallory Gymnasium. The two teams are set to meet again in the SAA Tournament quarterfinals, with the Lynx as the top seed and the Warriors the eighth seed.
Madi Pierce's first of three made treys gave Hendrix (8-15, 2-10 SAA) a field goal advantage less than a minute into the game. A
Kennedi Burns layup 3:20 into the first quarter allowed the Warriors to keep the upper hand. Pierce scored five of her team's seven points in the frame, but Rhodes (20-2, 12-0 SAA) led 13-7 after 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, Burns scored seven-straight points and seven of the last nine for the Warriors, who trailed 33-19 at intermission.
Hendrix closed within five, 41-36, with 2:22 left in the third quarter after an
Alicia McCloria triple and trailed 45-36 with 10 minutes to play. The Warriors shot 50 percent (7-of-14) from the floor in the period.
In the fourth quarter,
Drew Gaeng's team shot 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the field and 60 percent (3-of-5) from 3. Consecutive baskets in the paint by
Blysse Harmon, followed by a Pierce bucket, cut the Warriors' deficit to 52-47 with 6:30 left in the game. Six-straight points by the Warriors brought them within a single possession at 62-59 with 1:17 on the clock, but the Lynx responded with a 6-0 run to pull away.
Rhodes' Catherine Althoff and A'niya Lagarde each had a double-double. Althoff ended with 20 points, while Lagarde had 16. Each player pulled down 12 rebounds.
Ellen Hagen scored 13 points for the Lynx.
Althoff and Hagen each made three 3s. Lagarde and Alli Mayeux each were 4-of-6 from the foul line.
Rhodes shot 35.4 percent (23-of-65) overall and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the free throw line.
Pierce ended with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-20 shooting. Burns added 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting. McCloria scored nine points, all from deep.
Pierce and
Caroline Wendt each pulled down eight boards, while Harmon had seven.
Hendrix shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) overall.
Each team shot 33.3 percent (8-of-24) from distance.
