CONWAY, Ark. - Hendrix continued its best start in program history after scoring a pair of wins Sunday over Saint Thomas (Texas) at Warrior Baseball Field. The Warriors won the first game, 7-1, and second contest, 5-0.
At 9-0, Hendrix owns the second longest active win streak in the country, one game behind Grinnell (Iowa).
The Warriors, who are 8-0 at home, are in the middle of a 10-game homestand.
In game one, a
Rally Miller two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the second inning got Hendrix on the board first.
The Celts cut the deficit in half in the top of the third via a Cameron McClure RBI single, but the Warriors opened up some breathing room with a four-run sixth. An
Adam Bland two-run double made the score 4-1. Bland scored on a wild pitch, and
Kyle Kirk walked with the bases loaded to push the margin to five.
Hendrix added an insurance run in the seventh off a
Juan Pablo Leon RBI ground out.
Miller and
Drake Job each batted 2-for-4. Miller and Bland each drove in two. Job scored twice. Leon drew three walks of his team's nine walks.
Andrei Stoyanow (1-0) picked up the win on the mound, allowing just one unearned run on four hits with eight strikeouts and three walks in six innings.
Zach Orlando threw 1.1 innings of one-hit relief and fanned two.
Kyle Wellman pitched 1.2 innings of hitless relief with a strikeout out of the bullpen.
Five different Saint Thomas (2-7) players had one hit. Kyle Bearden scored once.
Landon Murray (0-2) was saddled with the loss after pitching 5.1 innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on six hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Murray, Nick Petro and Kalob Becak each threw a wild pitch.
Each team committed two errors.
In game two, a
Zach Marriott sacrifice fly in the first proved to be all the scoringÂ
Jack Hodgins (3-0) would need. The reigning Southern Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week tossed the second complete game of his career, scattering three hits with nine strikeouts against two walks on a career-high 118 pitches.
In the third, an
Owen Shaw (1) solo shot to right preceded a
Rail Gilliam sacrifice fly, putting the Warriors up a field goal.
Hendrix added insurance runs in the sixth off a Marriott RBI triple and
Jackson Olivi sacrifice fly.
Marriott, Shaw, Miller and
Jacob Carpentier each had a hit. All of the Warriors' four hits went for extra bases.
With one triple in Sunday's second game, Hendrix is up to eight for the season, which ranks second in Division III and one behind Centenary (La.).
Marriott ended with two RBIs. Bland, Mariott, Shaw, Miller and
Riley McMurren each crossed home plate. Gilliam drew two of the team's four base on balls. Bland stole two bases.
Tristan Pitkin, Knight Newcomb and Noah Martinez each batted 1-for-3 in the loss.
Chris Parsons (1-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing three earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks in five innings. Cole Grimes gave up two earned runs on one hit with a strikeout and walk in one inning of relief.
Hendrix and Saint Thomas conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader Monday. First pitch in game one at Warrior Baseball Field is set for noon CT.
