CONWAY, Ark. - RV/RV Hendrix dropped the series opener against Millsaps (Miss.), 11-8, on Thursday in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) action. The Warriors fall to 16-6 at Warrior Baseball Field.
The Majors jumped out to a 7-0 lead through the middle of three innings before Hendrix (24-9, 9-7 SAA) tied the affair, starting with five runs in the bottom of the third.
Owen Shaw and
Rail Gilliam each had a two-run hit in the frame, followed by a
Zach Marriott RBI double to right center to cut the deficit to two.Â
A Shaw RBI single to right and Gilliam sacrifice fly to center in the fourth knotted the contest at seven, but Millsaps (17-17, 7-9 SAA) retook the upper hand for good in the fifth off a David Abbadessa RBI single through the left side. An Austin Arceneaux three-run double to right center in the top of the sixth proved to be the game-winner.
Gilliam's second sacrifice fly of the night in the home half of the sixth cut his team's deficit to three, but with runners on second and third and two outs, a fly out to left in the next at-bat stymied the rally.
The Majors' Bradley Pelle was 2-for-3 with a double, triple and three runs scored. Arceneaux had a double, drove in four and scored twice. Mark Petkovsek also scored twice.
Millsaps' Ryan Erwin (6-1) threw 6.2 innings of relief, allowing three earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
The Warriors'
Rally Miller was 3-for-3 and along with
Adam Bland and
Tyler Webb scored two runs. Shaw was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Gilliam plated four. Shaw and Bland each walked twice.
Will Graves (0-1) started on the mound for Hendrix, surrendering six runs, two earned, on five hits with a strikeout and two walks in two innings.
Zach Orlando threw two innings of hitless relief and fanned three.
The series concludes Friday with a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is 2 p.m. CT.
