BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - No. 5 seed Hendrix defeated No. 4 seed Oglethorpe (Ga.), 11-3, on Thursday in the first game for each team at Striplin Field in the Birmingham-Southern (Ala.) Pod in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament.

The Warriors snap the Stormy Petrels' three-game win streak and improve to 3-0 all-time in the series in the SAA Tournament, including 2-0 in neutral site affairs as the fifth seed in the first game of the tournament. The Orange and Black's 28 wins are second most in program history and two shy of matching the mark from 2019.

Hendrix (28-13) advances to face No. 8 seed Sewanee (Tenn.), which on Thursday defeated top seed and No. 3/3 Birmingham-Southern, 16-7, on Friday at 11:30 a.m. CT in the double elimination tournament.

The Warriors jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning. After a Rally Miller two-run single up the middle, Zach Marriott connected on the first of two three-run bombs to right Thursday, this one off Colby James.

In the fourth, Colin Stewart replaced James after giving up consecutive singles to Miller and Adam Bland with one out, and Marriott (5) belted Stewart's third pitch over the outfield fence to make the score 8-0. Oglethorpe (19-20) cut its deficit to five with three runs in the bottom of the frame, including RBIs from Carson Weir and Shota Barbeau on singles and Andrew Noack via a walk.

In the seventh, Marriott scored when Drake Job reached on a fielder's choice, making the score 9-3. Tyler Webb scored on a Rail Gilliam sacrifice fly to left in the eighth and drove in Job on a RBI single to third an inning later.

Marriott ended 3-for-4 with six RBIs and three runs scored. Miller was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Joseph Watts batted 2-for-4. Miller and Bland each scored twice. Bland drew two of his team's five walks.

Hendrix's Jack Hodgins, who sat down the Stormy Petrels the first time through the order, pitched four innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts. Zach Orlando (1-1) earned the win with five innings of five-hit relief with four strikeouts. Each player walked two batters.

Weir, Barbeau and Mason Pearcy each had two hits.

James (2-4) took the loss and was chased after just 3.1 innings, surrendering seven earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts, three walks and a hit batter.
