Rally Miller's two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning completed Hendrix's 4-3 comeback win over Sewanee (Tenn.) on the second day of the Birmingham-Southern (Ala.) Pod in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament. The Warriors have won 17 of 25 meetings since joining the league, including six in a row overall and a 2-0 postseason mark, with both wins coming at neutral sites, and advance to the championship round of the pod, which starts Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
Hendrix (29-13), the fifth seed, faces top seed and No. 3/3 Birmingham-Southern in an elimination game for the Panthers after they sent home fourth seed Oglethorpe (Ga.), 9-6, and the Tigers, 9-5, on Friday.
The Warriors'Â 29 wins are second most in program history and one shy of matching the mark from 2019.
Hendrix trailed by three down to its final six outs. The first four batters in the eighth reached base, culminating in two RBIs for
Drake Job when he reached on a fielding error by Mike Lewishall, allowing
Zach Marriott and
Rail Gilliam to score. After an intentional walk to
Hogan Ralston to load the bases for the second time in the frame, Miller delivered the seventh pitch of the at-bat to center for his only hit of the game, and Job and
Juan Pablo Leon came home to put the Warriors in front for good.
Job ended 2-for-4 at the plate. In addition to Miller, Marriott, Gilliam, and
Owen Shaw each had a base hit. Gilliam drew two of his team's eight walks. Miller, Marriott and Gilliam each stole a base.
The Warriors'
Kyle Wellman, making his first start on the mound since April 11, 2021, pitched 5.1 innings Friday, which he also did in his last start. Wellman allowed two unearned runs on four hits with a season-high seven strikeouts against three walks in a no-decision.Â
Jacob Wagner (4-1) picked up the win with 3.2 innings out of the bullpen, giving up one earned run on two hits with four strikeouts.
Sully McCreery batted 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored in defeat.
Matt Munn pitched the first six innings for the Tigers but took a no-decision, scattering four hits with seven strikeouts and five walks. Holden Shell (1-4) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs, one earned, on one hit with three strikeouts and two walks in an inning of relief.
Each team had six hits and committed an error.
