Birmingham, Ala. - Coming off of the bye week, Hendrix hit the road to take on Birmingham-Southern (BSC), knowing a win would keep them at least tied for second in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) standings.
BSC had other plans, pulling off a 16-15 upset of the Warriors at General Krulak Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Hendrix got out to a fast start by scoring on its opening drive, as
Jacob Buniff found
Bryler Nitcholas from 27 yards out for the score. The Warriors opted to go for two and converted the attempt with an
Auvic White reception.
BSC would respond with just over five minutes to play in the first quarter and tied the game after a successful 2-point conversion attempt of their own.
The 8-8 scoreline would carry into halftime.
Late in the third quarter, Hendrix re-took the lead off an 11-yard touchdown reception by
Tanner Grimes, the first of his career. This time, the Warriors opted to kick the PAT and were successful to make it a 15-8 ball game.
BSC would respond on the following drive with another touchdown, but opted to go for two once again. The try was good, and ultimately served as the game-winner, as Hendrix was unable to mount a scoring drive in its last couple opportunities.
Hendrix totaled 306 yards of total offense in 34.37 minutes of possession compared to BSC's 302, but gave up 7 sacks — an absolutely crippling figure.
The Warriors were 6-of-16 on 3rd-down conversions while holding BSC to 4-of-12.
Seth Hakanson led Hendrix with 10 total tackles, with
Nathan Hahn recording 7.
Jacob Buniff finished the afternnon 23-of-39 for 231 yards and a couple scores.
Kanyn Utley led the receiving corp with 5 catches for 64 yards.
The Warriors will be back in action next Saturday versus Rhodes at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock. Kick-off is set for 6:00 PM.
