Conway, Ark.- It was the opening tip-off for basketball season last night for Warrior fans, as Hendrix hosted the University of the Ozarks Eagles at Grove Gymnasium.
Unfortunately, the Warriors started out of the gates slow, trailing at one point in the first quarter by a score of 14-1. But the Warriors would climb back into it the deficit and end the first quarter trailing 17-9. Going into the half, the Warriors trailed the Eagles by a score of 27-17.
Coming out of the half, the Warriors started to heat up, shooting 36% from the field in the third quarter and 40% in the fourth, but it would be no match for the Eagles, who would hold on for a 62-50 win, spoiling the Warriors home opener.
The Warriors were never able to really get things going offensively, shooting 27.6% from the field and 17.9% from three and struggled to contain the Eagles, who shot 42.9% from the field and dominated down below with 32 points in the paint. The Warriors never had a lead in the game.
Shelby Heil ended the game with what we hope is the first of many double-doubles, posting 14 points and 11 boards. Heil shot 80% from the free throw line, shooting 4-5.
Simone Shields scored 12 points and added 2 rebounds and 2 assists as well. Shields made a game high 6 free throws, going 6 of 9.
Natalie Edmonson had a lights out home debut, leading all scorers with 15 points off the bench, going 4-8 from beyond the arc.
The Warriors will be back in action on Monday, November 13th, as they travel to Irving, TX to take on the University of Dallas. Action is slated to start at 5:30 PM.
