Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Big Second Half Lifts Hendrix to Back-to-Back SAA Wins

Conway, Ark. - Hendrix limped into this weekend's conference doubleheader with Centre and Sewanee after going winless in the first half of Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play, but a 79-71 win over Centre on Friday night set the stage for the Warriors to flip the script heading into the second half of the schedule.

And how did they deliver.

Caleb Squires dropped a game-high 21 points and Darvis Rasberry Jr. recorded a second-consecutive double-double to lead Hendrix to an emphatic 70-57 win over Sewanee on Sunday afternoon at Grove Gymnasium. The Warriors put together 80 consecutive minutes of solid basketball over the last three days and look to be a far cry from the injury-plagued team that started out 0-7 in the SAA.

Hendrix scored 12 of the game's opening 16 points and never trailed in the first half until a Sewanee three-ball at the buzzer put the Tigers up by two heading into halftime.

The Warriors came out slower in the second half relative to the first 20 minutes of play and found themselves down by 7 with just under ten minutes left to play in regulation. With Sewanee threatening to pull away, Coach McCracken got exactly response he would have been hoping for as Hendrix proceeded to score the game's next ten points that kick-started a 22-5 run.

Squires' jumper with 1:48 left capped off that run to give Hendrix a 66-55 lead -- its largest of the afternoon up to that point -- and put the Warriors firmly in the driver's seat heading into the waning minutes. Hendrix made several key defensive stops to nullify any potential comeback from the Tigers and cap off a dominant second half that saw the home side outscore the Tigers 38-23.

The Warriors shot just 26.7% from the deep but were a solid 42.3% from the field and got a huge boost from 22 points off Sewanee turnovers. Hendrix excelled on the boards as well, outrebounding the Tigers 40-33.

The win improves Hendrix to 5-15 (2-7 SAA) and will ride the high off their back-to-back SAA wins into next week's home doubleheader versus Oglethorpe and Berry. Tip-off versus the Stormy Petrels is set for 8:00 PM Friday evening at Grove Gymnasium.
