Late Third Quarter Run Buries Warriors in Jackson

Jackson, Miss. - The Hendrix Warriors lost their Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Quarterfinal matchup 82-67 to top-seeded Millsaps on Sunday afternoon at the Hangar Dome.

Coach Drew Gaeng's side got off to a great start in pursuit of the upset, outscoring the Majors 15-14 through one quarter of play on the back of back-to-back three-pointers from Ava Knoedl and Megan Gray to get the party started. After falling behind 13-11 late the quarter, Knoedl and Simone Shields were both good from the field to retake the lead.

After the away side built up a four-point lead (25-21) at the 4:54 mark, the Majors went on a 16-4 run to close out the half.

The two teams traded buckets to start the second half, and the Warriors were able tie the game at 42-42 after Simone Shields' old-fashioned three-point play with just over five minutes to play in the third.

But it would be a similar story late in the third as it was in the second, as Millsaps proceeded to go on a 21-6 run in the last five minutes and take a 15 point lead into the final period.

Knoedl began the fourth with a three-ball to cut their deficit to 12, but that would be the closest the away side got to Millsaps down the stretch as the top-seeded Majors closed out the win to end the Warriors' season.

Riley Brady led Hendrix with 17 points and 13 rebounds -- her seventh double-double in the last ten games -- to wrap up an outstanding freshman campaign.

Megan Gray finished the afternoon with 14 points after knocking down 4-of-9 long ball attempts. Shields finished with 11 points, while Knoedl recorded 10 points.

Hendrix ends the year 4-22 (2-12 SAA), but will return their entire starting five heading into the 2024-25 season.
