Warriors Dominate Southwestern in League Opener

Conway, Ark. - Hendrix put up over 500 yards of offense and limited Southwestern to under 250 yards as the Warriors rolled to a 35-20 win to open play in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA).

Jacob Buniff threw for 389 yards while Auvic White picked up 76 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown as Hendrix went for their third-consecutive game with over 100 yards rushing.

Zach Schultz's defense held the Pirates to just 14 first downs and only gave up 13 points over the course of 60 minutes. The Warriors' offense, on the other hand, picked up 31 first downs with 514 total yards.

Hendrix opened the game with a 9-play scoring drive that was capped off by a Jax Johnson 28-yard touchdown reception from Buniff. The Warriors went for two and successfully converted as Buniff found Westin Bruce on a short pass.

Buniff was on the mark again on the next drive, engineering a 4-play 79-yard drive that finished with the Warriors' gunslinger finding Kanyn Utley for a 21-yard score.

Southwestern answered early in the second quarter to (somewhat) halve the deficit, but Hendrix would respond with a little over four minutes to go in the half as Buniff found Parker Turley for Buniff's third passing touchdown of the half. The Pirates closed the first half with a 11-play, 79-yard scoring drive to make it 22-13 going into halftime.

Hendrix looked to be comfortable to start the second half as they marched into the red area, before Buniff was picked off that resulted in a pick-six that trimmed the Orange and Black's lead to two.

Westin Bruce was on the receiving end of Buniff's fourth touchdown pass with 11:05 to play to make it a two-score game. Auvic White scored from four yards out with 5:14 to seal the game.

The Warriors' defense was dominant all afternoon long and never let Southwestern's aerial attack get going. The Pirates threw for only 121 yards and were forced to punt six times.

Hendrix (2-1, 1-0 SAA) remain home and will host Huntingdon next Saturday at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium. The contest will highlight the return of Homecoming to Hendrix College, which hasn't sanctioned a Homecoming since 1960.
