Box Score Shreveport, La. - 11 years ago today, Hendrix resurrected its football program and celebrated its first game in 53 years with a 46-44 win over Westminster (Mo.).
On Saturday, the Warriors opened up their 12th season of the modern era versus Centenary, who was resurrecting its own football program after a 77-year hiatus. However, there would be no storybook ending for the Gents in their first game back as Hendrix rolled to a season-opening win in the first-ever matchup between the two sides.
Hendrix opted to receive the opening kick and wasted no time setting the tone, as junior quarterback
Jacob Buniff engineered an 8-play, 75-yard drive capped off by a
Jason Sullivan 4-yard rush for the game's first score.
The Warriors forced a Centenary punt on the home team's first possession and got the ball back at the Gents' 47-yard line. After driving down to Centenary's 14-yard line, Buniff found
Jax Johnson with a short pass, and Johnson did the rest to find the endzone for Hendrix's second touchdown. It would be the first of four touchdown passes on the day for the Warriors' main signal caller, who also co-led the Warriors in rushing with 47 yards on the ground. Saturday night marked Buniff's 6th career game with 4+ touchdown passes.
Parker Turley and
Jax Johnson each had two touchdown receptions apiece from Buniff.
Defensively, Hendrix held the Gents to 290 yards of total offense and limited them to just a 30% conversion rate on third down (3-10).
Tristian Johnson and
McKay Young both had 2 sacks. The former had a game-high 9 tackles with 4 tackles for loss.
Jayvian Coulter picked off the Gents with 5:24 left to play in the first half with a return of 24 yards to set up the Warriors with another scoring opportunity.
Hendrix improves to 1-0 and will return to the Natural State to host East Texas Baptist next Saturday evening at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock. Tickets to Saturday's game can be purchased
