Rome, Ga. - Hendrix women's basketball dug themselves into too deep a hole to climb out of versus Berry on Friday evening en route to a 51-42 defeat.
The Vikings blitzed Hendrix from the opening tip and scored 14 unanswered points before
Simone Shields was able to put the Warriors on the board midway through the quarter to make it 14-2. Hendrix ended the opening quarter with three unanswered points off free throws from
Megan Gray and
Riley Brady to cut the Viking lead to 13 heading into the second.
Hendrix trailed 27-13 with 2:43 remaining in the half before rattling off 7 consecutive points, a run capped off by
Brooklyn Rowe's triple at the 1:22 mark to bring Berry as close as they had been since early in the first. The Vikings would score the last four points of the half, including a buzzer-beater to send the home team into halftime leading 31-20.
The two teams traded punches in the second half, with the Warriors unable to make a serious dent in Berry's lead. Hendrix cut the deficit to 7 late in the fourth quarter off a Brady free throw, but that would be as close as they would get to the Vikings down the stretch.
Shields netted a season-high 16 points in the loss. Brady was kept out of double-figures for the first time in 9 games but finished with 11 boards.
The Warriors (7-13, 0-7 SAA) now head to the Black Top at Oglethorpe, still looking for that elusive first win in league play.
