Football Loses Heartbreaker in 50-48 Shootout at TLU

Seguin, Texas - Jacob Buniff threw a career-high seven touchdowns on Saturday afternoon at Texas Lutheran, but the seven scores were not enough as TLU won at the last second in 50-48 thriller.

Hendrix looked to have won the game late when Buniff connected with Brooks McGee on a 78-yard catch-and-score with 0:27 remaining. But the Bulldogs went 63 yards with limited time remaining and scored on the final play of the game to escape with the win.

Buniff finished the day 24-of-44 for 418 yards. His seven passing touchdowns tie the program mark for touchdown throws in a single game. Auvic White rushed for 124 yards on just 14 carries, averaging 8.7 yards per rush. McGee led all receivers with a career-high 186 yards on 7 receptions with 2 touchdowns.

The Warriors took a 13-0 lead early in the first quarter but were unable to capitalize after several defensive stops to put more separation between them and the hosts. TLU took a 21-20 lead midway through the second quarter, but Hendrix scored late in the half with a Jordan Faz 17-yard reception to retake the lead and take a five-point advantage into halftime.

The two teams traded blows in the second half, with Hendrix hamstrung due to four interceptions that killed potential scoring drives.

Both defenses proved effective on third downs, with Hendrix limiting the Bulldogs to just three conversions on 15 attempts. Jayvial Coulter led the Warriors with 10 total tackles. Sam Spurlock recorded the only solo sack, with Jacob Moody and Tristian Johnson combining for another. Spurlock led all participants with 2 tackles-for-loss for a total of 8 yards.

The loss drops Hendrix to 3-3 and 1-1 in the SCAC. They will return home to host Centenary next Saturday under the lights at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium.
