Conway, Ark. - Hendrix suffered its third-consecutive loss on Sunday, this time in a 79-74 defeat to Southwestern (TX) at Grove Gymnasium.
Joseph Dockett led the Warriors with 22 points, while
Holden Plant added 19 points and 8 rebounds.
There were 11 lead changes and 11 instances of the score being tied over the 40 minutes as both teams traded buckets. The Warriors out-scored Southwestern 36-23 in the paint and got 23 points off the bench. The difference came from behind the arc, as the Pirates nailed 10 of their 24 long ball attempts while Hendrix only knocked down 4 of 17 shots.
Anthony Boone's squad shot 43.1% from the field but struggled at the line, hitting just 20 of 35 foul shots.
Kyle Roach finished alongside Dockett and Plant in double-figures with 10 points, while
Charles Hatchett recorded 3 blocks defensively.
Jaxon Herrera's layup with 1:29 remaining in the first half tied the game at 35-35, but three late points from the Pirates sent the visitors into halftime with a 38-35 advantage. Southwestern led by 11 four minutes into the second half, but the Warriors began to claw back, and a big four-minute span saw Hendrix tie the game at 52-52 with 9:29 remaining in the second half after two foul shots from Herrera.
Southwestern responded to boost their lead back up until
Eli Lovelady's corner three at the 7:26 mark cut the lead back down to two. The Warriors kept the score close down to the final media timeout, but ultimately the Pirates were able to create enough distance between them and the hosts down the stretch to see off the win.
Hendrix (0-2) now hits the road for a couple of in-state exhibitions against UA-Monticello and UA-Fort Smith before returning home to host East Texas Baptist next Sunday at Grove Gymnasium.
