FB | Warriors Lose Early Lead, Fall to McMurry

Abilene, Texas - Hendrix's bid for a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship flamed out on Saturday with a 34-28 road loss to McMurry.

The Warriors were hot out of the gates, scoring 21 points in the first 10 minutes of the game to blitz the hosts and take a three-score lead early. But the Warhawks got up off the mat and closed the first half with 20 unanswered points, then took the lead for good early in the second half.

Hendrix opened the game with a 7-play, 75-yard scoring drive that was capped off by a 17-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Buniff to Amare Foreman. Auvic White found the endzone on the Warriors' next drive with a 11-yard reception from Buniff. Hendrix then took advantage of a short field after forcing a Warhawk fumble, with Buniff finding Westin Bruce for a 29-yard score on the drive's first play.

McMurry rebounded offensively to get back on the scoreboard and suddenly found their footing defensively, as Hendrix went two-and-a-half quarters without picking up a first down offensively. The Warhawks took advantage of Hendrix's offensive stagnation to retake the lead early in the second half as part of a 34-0 nothing run before Hendrix got back on the board early in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to one score.

Ryan Maxwell had another stellar day leading the Hendrix defense, leading all participants with 12 tackles, including one tackle-for-loss, to go along with a blocked field goal and a pass break-up.

With the loss, Hendrix falls to 5-4 and 3-2 in the SCAC. They will now face Lyon at 3:00 PM next Saturday at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock as part of the SCAC's championship weekend, with Hendrix already having wrapped up third place in the final league standings.
