WBB | Hendrix Grinds Out Gritty Win over Arkansas Baptist

Conway, Ark. - Hendrix and Arkansas Baptist met for just the second time in their program's histories on Sunday afternoon with Hendrix grinding out a 66-63 nail-biter to get back in the win column. The two teams entered the contest on opposite sides of the form spectrum. The Lady Buffaloes entered Sunday on a heater, having won their first seven games of the season, while Hendrix sat at 1-4 coming off a loss against Rhodes the previous day.

Bella Cates led all scorers with a season-high 19 points, knocking down 5 of her 9 attempts from behind the arc and hitting 2 critical free throws down the stretch to help seal the victory. On the boards, ABC had no answer for Riley Brady, who finished with 25 boards after collecting 23 the previous day. Brady scored 14 points to boot and was 8-of-9 from the stripe.

Natalie Edmonson hit her first of two threes a minute into the contest to tie it at 3-3 before ABC went on an 11-2 scoring run to take a 13-5 lead. After Edmonson's triple, the Warriors scored their next five points from the line. The Lady Buffaloes got their lead up to 7 with 1:20 remaining before Megan Manuel's long ball made it 17-13 with just over thirty seconds left. Brailey Forst got to the line with 0:13 left and cut the deficit to two heading into the second quarter.

The Warriors took their first lead of the contest at the 7:48 mark as Cates hit a corner three on a fastbreak to give Hendrix a 22-21 advantage. With the score tied at 26-26, Cates was once again good from deep, hitting her second three-ball to beat the shot clock and regain the lead for her side. But the Lady Buffaloes would close the half on a 9-0 scoring run to take a 35-29 lead into hafltime.

Jumpers from Cates and Chloey-Rei Brown pulled the Warriors to within two early in the second half, and a fastbreak three from Edmonson gave Hendrix a 37-36 lead before Cates stepped into another triple to increase the Warriors' lead to four. Brady then put the Warriors on her back, scoring the next six points as part of a personal 6-2 scoring run. With the score at 46-41, Cates was at it again, connecting on another three to give Hendrix their largest lead of the afternoon. Brailey Forst's jumper with 24 seconds left in the period set the Warriors' lead back to 8 going into the final quarter.

ABC closed the gap in the fourth quarter with 6 of the first 8 points of the final frame, but the Warriors then scored six unanswered, with the run highlighted by another Cates' three. The Lady Buffaloes began to whittle away at the lead as the game entered the final stretch, as free throws from Brown and Cates kept the visitors at arms-length. Brown's layup with just over a minute remaining took the lead back up to four, and after ABC brought it back down to two, the Warriors came up with a crucial defensive stop on what turned out to be ABC's final possession.

Edmonson finished alongside Cates and Brady in double-figures with 12 points, while Brown recorded a season-high 6 assists while contributing 9 points.

Looking ahead, Hendrix (2-4) will get a week-and-a-half off before hosting Howard Payne on December 19 at Grove Gymnasium.
