Conway, Ark.- Hendrix baseball fell to the Nichols College Bison in both games this weekend, falling to 9-7 on the season.
Game 1 (L, 14-10)
For the first time all season, Dylan Kalmus looked human and took his first loss of the season. Chance Reed would pitch an inning of one hit ball. Nathan Buchman made his debut this season, throwing an inning. Tucker Isbell & Nate Hirsh would close out the pitching for the Warriors.
The Bison got the high scoring affair started early, going up 2-0 in the 1st. Hendrix would answer back in the 2nd, with a Griffin Baird single through the left side to score Drake Job. Shaun Pope would bring Joseph Watts home thanks to a hit-by-pitch. Zane Nolan would then hit a sacrifice fly to bring Baird home to take the 3-2 lead.
Nichols would take the lead in the 3rd, but the Warriors would answer thanks to a Baird double and an Austin Rabago single to score Baird. The Bison would plate three in the 5th, but a Pope double would even the game.
Things snowballed in the 6th & 7th inning, with the Bison plating 6 runs before Hogan Ralston would bring Rabago home with a single up the middle. In the 8th, Drake Job would score Nolan and then Watts would score Owen Shaw to plate the Warriors' 10th run. The Bison would plate one final run in the 9th and put the Warriors' hopes to bed, winning 14-10.
Game 2 (L, 6-5)
The Warriors would look to bounce back in game two of the series, with Aiden Leggett on the mound for Hendrix. Leggett would go three innings, giving up 3 runs (all earned) with 5 walks and 4 strikeouts. JD Nichols was the pitcher of record, going 2 innings giving up one run on two hits. Rowan Glover and Braxton Waller would both make appearances going two innings.
The Bison scored 3 runs in the top of the 1st to take the 3-0 advantage before Hendrix would answer back with 2 runs of their own, thanks to a Job single and a Shaw double.
The Warriors would tie things up thanks to a Jacob Carpentier single in the third. The Bison would take the lead in the fourth and then add additional runs in the seventh and eighth inning to give them the 6-3 advantage.
Not unfamiliar with late game heroics, the Warriors looked to cut into the Bison lead heading into the eighth. Giancarlo Digiacomo would double to left field to bring two runs to draw the game to one run. The Warriors would take down Nichols 1-2-3 in the top of the 9th to give themselves a chance to either tie it up or walk it off. The Warriors would have a chance with Job getting on bade with a walk, but that would be as close as they would get as they grounded out to fall 6-5.
The Warriors will host Grinnell College Monday and Tuesday for a two game series at Warrior Baseball Field. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
