Conway, Ark. - It was in unfamiliar territory, but the Hendrix Warriors secured their first Southern Athletic Association (SAA) series win of the
Kara LeLeux era with a doubleheader sweep of the Centre Colonels on Sunday afternoon before dropping the final game of the series on Monday morning.
Due to the weather that plagued much of the country last week, the series had to be moved to the City of Colleges ballpark .
Game 1 (W, 11-4)
Emma Salis spun a great game in the circle en route to her fourth winning decision of the year, limiting the Colonels to four runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of work.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, when
Kaycee Schoen sent a bases-loaded single down the left field line to score
Ella Boling and
Betty Wolfe.
Rylee Harris was later brought home on a
Tori Maldonado fielder's choice to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead. After Centre pulled one back in the fifth, Wolfe led off the home half of the inning with a hit-by-pitch and reached second on a passed ball. Harris then sent her second home run of the year out to left field to make it 5-1. Sam Wood added on another run later in the inning on an RBI ground out to score Schoen.
The Colonels made the game interesting in the sixth inning with back-to-back home runs, but Hendrix plated four runs in bottom of the inning off RBI singles from Harris, Maldonado, and Rogers.
Tori Veith entered in the seventh and worked around back-to-back one out hits to retire the side and clinch the first game.
Game 2 (W, 11-8)
Tori Maldonado was the hero in Game 2 to secure the series for the Warriors, stepping in with two outs and two on to walk it off in the seventh with a three-run shot.
Maldonado got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with an RBI single through the right side to score
Betty Wolfe.
Centre scored five runs in the second, but Hendrix responded in the third inning with a four-spot to tie the game, including a bases-clearing three-RBI double from
Peyton Frady.
Sophia Shuff singled in
Betty Wolfe in the fourth to give Hendrix a 6-5 lead. Wolfe scored again in the fifth off a
Rylee Harris double, and Harris then scored when
Kaycee Schoen induced a fielding error.
The Colonels tied it up in the sixth, but
Sadie Lewis worked around a one-out hit to retire the side in the seventh to turn it back over to the Warrior bats. After
Ella Boling lined out to begin the inning, Wolfe and Harris reached on one-out singles. Schoen then popped up to put two outs on the board and bring up Maldonado. On a 1-0 count, Maldonado sent a missile out to center field that just cleared the fence to walk it off and win the series for the Warriors.
Sadie Lewis got the win in relief to improve to 2-2 on the year, allowing two earned runs on six hits.
Game 3 (L, 5-4)
Hendrix was unable to sweep the series on Monday morning, falling 5-4 to the Colonels.
Emmaline Trosclair was the pitcher of record, tossing 6.0 IP and allowing 5 runs on 10 hits.
Emma Salis was nails in relief, entering in the seventh with two in scoring position and retired the next three hitters to get out of the jam scoreless.
Hendrix drew first blood in the contest with a couple RBIs from
Kendyl Patton and
Tori Veith to take a 2-0 lead. After Veith's RBI walk, the Warriors failed to continue to take advantage of a bases-loaded opportunity as they left them loaded to head into the second.
The Colonels plated a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second due to a fielding error in the outfield to tie the game, but Hendrix retook the lead in the next half inning on a
Kaycee Schoen two-out RBI double to score
Rylee Harris and make it 3-2.
Centre tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single, and then took a 5-3 lead on a two-RBI double. Hendrix answered in the bottom half of the inning on another
Kendyl Patton RBI single to score
Emmaline Trosclair. Veith drew another two-out walk to load the bases and put the tying run on third, but
Peyton Frady popped up in the infield to end the inning. After Salis entered in the seventh to retire the side,
Rylee Harris smoked a double down the left field line to put the tying run in scoring position, but the Warriors were unable to bring her home as the final batter was retired.
